If you're seeking some quiet downtime after a busy safari or just fancy a few days on a picture-perfect beach, Lazy Lagoon is a just the ticket. This small 12-banda lodge is set on its own peninsula with 9kms of private sandy beach, ideal for unwinding, watching the passing fishing boats, swimming and savouring tasty cuisine. The lodge has kayaks and sailing dinghies for you to use to help you explore the coastline at your leisure. As well as the sandy beaches, the island has forests you can wander through and plentiful birdlife to be observed. If you'd like to explore further afield, staff are happy to arrange trips to Bagamoyo, the nearest mainland town, an erstwhile trading port with some interesting historical buildings and a museum.

Back at Lazy Lagoon you can relax on the veranda of your banda as you look out over the ocean. Indoors there's a living area, master bedroom with en-suite bathroom and a mezzanine floor with 2 single beds, ideal for children. There's also a balcony on the upper level, for secluded relaxation. The furniture is crafted from local wood and the thatch roofs help keep the bandas cool.

The main open plan dining, living and bar area is also set beneath thatch and provides space for resting out of the heat of the sun, while the open sides admit a cooling breeze. Upstairs there's a second lounge which is the ideal vantage point for watching the sunset as you sip a chilled drink. Meals feature a high proportion of deliciously fresh seafood and can be eaten out on the beach or in the shaded dining area. The swimming pool is set at the tip of the peninsula beside the main building and has a deck for sunbathing after your refreshing swim.

Aah, at first glance our banda though clean looked a little tired, but to wake up with a full view of the ocean, with canoes and dhows drifting past, this site was truly glorious. There was very pleasant company from the managers and the lovely dogs, the service and food was excellent, and the location was beautiful - just wandering along the path accompanied by butterflies, strolling on the beach and lazing on the day bed or hammock was about as much activity as we felt was necessary, though we did enjoy an outing to Bagamoyo and learned a lot about colonial history there.
