Kwihala Camp consists of just 6 tents situated in a game rich area of northern Ruaha near Mwagusi Sand River. The emphasis is firmly on the wildlife and environment, with game drives, walking safaris and night drives all offered for a comprehensive safari experience.

The canvas tents are spacious and furnished with proper beds, bedside tables, dressing table, hanging space, rugs and curtains. There are electric lights and facilities for charging batteries and cameras. The ensuite bathroom has a bucket shower and flush toilet. Each tent has a private, shaded veranda, complete with traditional safari chairs.

The mess tent has separate dining and relaxing areas and has been tastefully furnished. There is ample room for guests to sit and chat over the day's events, while enjoying a cool drink from the bar. Evening meals are usually taken out in the open under the stars by the camp fire, weather permitting.

Kwihala has specially adapted open sided 4x4 vehicles, with raised seating for excellent game viewing. The drives take place in the early morning and late afternoon. The area around Kwihala is abundant in game, with lion, leopard, hyena, elephant, buffalo and zebra commonly seen. This is also a great region for bird watching, with some 220 species of birds. Kwihala also offers walking safaris and night drives depending on season. These are offered subject to weather conditions and to the availability of the armed rangers.

At Kwihala, we were greeted by the entire staff singing and playing to greet us, and to be handed wet flannels, not just then but every time we returned to camp, something that made the camp feel special from the word 'go'. We took full advantage of the drives, leaving camp at 6am most days with our excellent guides Charles and Tersam, the staff having brought us tea and biscuits at 5am. The tent, overlooking the sand river, where we were entertained by a large number of baboons trooping back and forth for water, was very comfortable, with bucket showers, the guides never failing to ensure that these would be filled at the right moment for our return. The food was superb and we enjoyed the sundowners (both in camp and elsewhere) and meals served beside a fire, to all residents and managers together, on the sand riverbed - a lovely way to meet other residents. On our last evening, when we were the only residents in camp and returned late from a night safari, a fire had been lit outside our tent, and dinner laid for us at a table beside - talk about personal attention...
