The name Kuthengo means 'wildlerness' which is apt, as the camp is located in the pristine environment of Liwonde National Park. It's a tranquil setting where you can take game drives, boat trips and guided walks to immerse yourself in nature. Accommodating a maximum of 10 guests, Kuthengo Camp retains an intimate atmosphere where you can feel at home between safaris.

You are likely to awake to the distinctive cries of fish eagles, which nest in the baobab trees near the camp, a call to action as you look forward to the day ahead. Rising early comes naturally here, as the sunlight fills the sky. and you set out on your first game drive or walk before the heat becomes too intense. Liwonde is home to a variety of wildlife including elephant, a range of antelope, hippo, crocodile and leopard. A number of species have been moved into the park in recent years such as black rhino, lion and cheetah, adding to its diversity. As well as fish eagles you can expect to see malachite and pied kingfishers, weaver birds and, with luck, Pel's fishing owl. 4x4 drives and nature walks are supplemented by boat rides in the green season (the end of December to early April), adding an extra dimension to game viewing.

Back in camp you can join fellow guests in the welcome shade of the lounge tent and, later, by the campfire, from both of which you are able to watch animals and birds by the Shire River. Meals are a sociable experience, eaten as a group in the dining tent or outdoors, an opportunity to share traveller's tales.

The 4 tents provide spacious accommodation, with the bedroom opening up to the river-facing veranda, the ideal place to rest and take in the views. The en-suite bathroom has his and hers hand basins and a bathtub, and there's an open air shower. The bed is draped with a mosquito net and includes an effective 'evening breeze' air conditioning system to keep you cool.
