Kulala Desert Lodge

Surrounded by red dunes, desolate mountains and gravel plains, Kulala Desert Lodge is set in the heart of the beautiful and desolate Namib Desert.

  • Experience a sleep out under the stars.
  • Enjoy the beautiful desert scenery surrounding the lodge.
  • Conquer one of the iconic Sossusvlei dunes.
  • Sip on a gin and tonic and watch the sunset over the mountains.

Kulala Desert Lodge is set at the heart of the Namib Desert in a private reserve surrounded by red dunes, gravel plains and mountains. The camp's main buildings, constructed from clay bricks have a style reminiscent of North Africa.  There is a wrap-around veranda overlooking a waterhole and the surrounding beautiful desert scenery. The cosy lounge area has a built-in fireplace, the indoor dining room and bar open onto the veranda where there is also an alfresco dining area.  The veranda leads the way to the plunge pool, perfect for a hot desert afternoon.

Meals are always a delight to look forward to. Brunch can be taken at the lodge, or if you are out exploring the dunes it can be served outdoors under the shade of a tree, there aren't many shady spots but your guide will know where they are. On your return to the lodge late afternoon, sundowners can be enjoyed with fellow guests before sitting down to dine under the stars or in the dining room if it's chilly.

The rooms at Kulala Desert Lodge all have the luxury of amazing scenery.  The canvas tented rooms are covered by a high thatch roof and set on wooden platforms. The design allows air flow through the rooms and the thatch helps keep them cool.  There are 3 doubles, 17 twins and 3 family rooms.  Each room has an en-suite bathroom, veranda with views to die for and an added extra of a flat rooftop where you can sleep out under the stars on a comfortable bedroll with a plush cosy duvet.

This is the closest accommodaton to the Sossusvlei dunes meaning you can get a head start.  Game drives in the private Kulala Nature Reserve offers visitors wonderful wildlife-viewing opportunities too which include gemsbok (oryx), bat-eared fox, brown hyaena and birdlife. The scenery is fantastic and it's a wonderful place to get some stunning photographs.  Take the opportunity to go on a sundowner drive, set out in the late afternoon and arrive at a remote and dramatic spot on the reserve in time to watch the sun turn the sky magnificent hues as it sets over the distant mountains or dunes as you enjoy a gin and tonic.

Client Rating for Namibia 5/5 from 12 reviews

Top top place, really friendly, fabulous desert location. It was bloomin' cold but we loved the unexpected hot water bottles. Outstanding.
