Kariega River Lodge

South Africa

  • Malaria free reserve
  • Big 5 game viewing
  • Superb birding
  • River cruise, fishing
  • Game drives and walking safaris
  • Far reaching views from the main deck

Open: Kariega River Lodge is open all year.

Location: The lodge is in the Kariega Game Reserve in the Eastern Cape. It's approximately 1.5 hours from Port Elizabeth.

Rooms:  There are just 10 thatched suites.  They have large picture windows, expansive private decks where you can sit and often see game from your own room. All are airconditioned with an overhead fan. There's a tea and coffee station and a well-stocked mini bar in each suite. The bathroom has a stand alone-bath, twin basins and shower.

Activities: Game drives are popular here as guests go in search of the Big 5. Morning and afternoon game drives are offered. In addition to this you can enjoy guided bush walks, fishing, canoeing and river cruises. Guests at River Lodge can also take the daily boat cruise down the Bushmans River to the village of Kenton-on-Sea and its pretty beaches. It should be noted that walking guides are often unarmed and we do not recommend accompanying an unarmed guide in this area where there are large numbers of potentially dangerous game.

Facilities: The main areas of the lodge are also under a high, thatch roof. Here you will find the welcoming communal lounge, dining room, bar area and a library. Next to this is the curio shop and swimming pool.

Dining: Meals are taken at individual tables both in the dining room and al-fresco.

Children: Children aged 11 and older are welcome at Kariega River Lodge.

Health: This is not a malarial area.

Communication: There is Wi-Fi in the main areas, but not in the suites.

Client Rating for South Africa 5/5 from 74 reviews

Lovely location by the river, very relaxing to sit with a drink and watch the wildlife including the cheeky monkeys trying to steal food. Fully inclusive of all food and drinks unless you had special requests for drink that they needed to buy in specially - which was not needed as they had a good selection. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Aim to arrive by 2pm as there will be an afternoon game drive on your arrival day.
