Kandawgyi Hill Resort is in the popular hill station of Pyin Oo Lwin (formerly known as Maymyo), about 70 kms from Mandalay. Due to its altitude the climate here is relatively cool, offering respite from the heat of the plains, which has long made the town popular with locals and visitors alike.
There are 15 rooms, designed to resemble colonial-style bungalows, arranged in the grounds. Room amenities include satellite TV, telephone, tea and coffee making facilities, bottled water, minibar and private bathroom. The painted walls, wooden furniture and patterned curtains give the rooms a homely feel. Each bungalow has a terrace from which you can survey the gardens. The main building houses the restaurant and coffee shop and outdoors there's a large terrace with views over the lawns towards the lake.
The National Kandawgyi Botanical Gardens are just next door. These were established in 1915, taking inspiration from London's famous Kew Gardens, and have hundreds of indigenous species including exotic orchids and lilies. You may by chance spot deer and tortoises roaming here. For the golfers, there's a nearby course where you can enjoy a game, with tee times arranged by the hotel. Excursions to local sites of interest, such as the Gokteik railway viaduct, can be arranged and you can take tours of the town in a horse-drawn carriage.
