Located in the remote and starkly beautiful Hoanib River vally, this camp offers you the chance to seek out desert-adapted wildlife, learn first-hand about Himba and Herero culture and spend time with conservationists at the Giraffe Conservation Foundation (GCF).
With just 6 tents an imtimate and exclusive atmosphere is assured. Set on raised decks, interiors are inviting, decorated in warm, earthy shades, with splashes of ochre echoing the richly coloured dunes of the region. Local craftsmen have provided much of the furniture and the camp has made effective use of recycled materials. Each tent has a bathroom and an outdoor shower with solar-heated water. Sitting on the veranda you can contemplate the scenery and tranquillity.
The main communal area is the mess tent where you rest between activities and enjoy a drink from the bar. Most meals are served outdoors in the fresh air. The camp fire is the ideal place to end your day, chatting over events and gazing at the star-filled sky.
Game drives allow you to seek out widlife including desert lion, zebra, gemsbok, kudu and a number of other antelope species, as well as the desert-adapted giraffe that are the main draw here. You are encouraged to visit the GCF field centre to learn about their work with these endangered creatures, and with other wildlife in the region. You can also accompany researchers in the field by booking this in advance and paying a donation. Other activities include a half day tracking black rhino, and guided walks with the emphasis on smaller wildlife such as birds, and flora. Both Himba and Herero people live in this area and you are welcome to join a guide on a visit to a local village to learn about their daily lives and culture.
