Corcovado Wilderness Lodge

Open: Corcovado Wilderness Lodge is open all year.

Location: Corcovado Wilderness Lodge borders Corcovado National Park on the Osa Peninsula in Costa Rica and is set in 170 acres of rainforest overlooking a beach. Access is by boat as there are no roads to the lodge. Boats leave from La Hacienda in the town of Sierpe each day for the 90-minute cruise to the lodge.

Rooms: There are 3 styles of bungalows: honeymoon suites are the smallest, deluxe bungalows, and junior suites. All are made out of local materials and decorated in a similar fashion, with tiled floors, wooden beamed ceilings and large windows. They're cooled by ceiling fans and the beds come complete with mosquito nets. There's ample storage space, a safe, minibar (pay locally), 24-hour electricity and an outdoor seating area. Each has its own bathroom with hot and cold water. Honeymoon suites have an opulent outdoor shower as well as an indoor shower. The larger deluxe rooms can cater to families. The 2 interconnecting junior suites are also ideal for families or groups of friends, and each has a good-sized sitting room.

Activities: From here you can go hiking in the national park, take specialist bird watching walks and night walks, go horse riding, explore Claro del Bosque and visit the beach at San Josecito. Water-based activities include snorkelling, diving, kayaking, boating through the mangroves and go fishing.

Facilities: Los Vitrales restaurant serves top quality meals including traditional Costa Rican dishes. El Bosque bar is in the rainforest, so you watch monkeys and birds as you sip a drink. There's a lounge where you can play a game of pool, read up on the local area or simple sit and chat. Outdoors there are 2 swimming pools, one centrally located and the other a short walk away in the forest. Margarita Sunset Point has superb views over the ocean and, as the name suggests, is the place to it and watch the sun go down each evening. The lodge provides transport to and from the local beach where there are loungers, parasols and hammocks. On site there's a massage room. The shop stocks T-shirts, sandals, sunhats, sunblock, toiletries, camera film and wildlife identification charts. The lodge offers a laundry service.

Dining: Meals are eaten at separate tables.

Children: Children of all ages are welcome. The deluxe bungalows and interconnecting suites can make good family accommodation.

Health: There is only a low risk of malaria in Costa Rica.

Communication: There is WiFi internet access by the main pool and in the lounge.
