Chintheche Inn is situated on the western shore of Lake Malawi with the Viphya Mountains as a backdrop and remnant patches of tropical rainforest nearby. Chintheche has one of the most beautiful settings in the country and is surrounded by a variety of activity options - the local village and market are always entertaining and the nearby Bandawe Mission offers a fascinating insight into the country's past.

The beach offers swimming (and there is a pool for rough weather!),wind surfing, sailing and beach barbeques can be arranged. Other activities of offer include mountain biking and horse riding. It should be noted that the nature of the beach can vary according to seasonal and weather conditions. In winter water levels are lower and rocks are visible near the water's edge, and storms can erode the sand also exposing rocks, while at other times the beach is sandy.

There are ten comfortable en-suite rooms all in a central block facing the lake with the gardens behind. There is a central dining area and bar though usually dining takes place under the stars (weather permitting!). This is an ideal spot for a family beach break or for those wanting a comfy hotel stop to use as a base to explore this interesting region. Mzuzu is an easy couple of hours away if you need to visit there and inland is the Luwawa forest area which can be linked on for hiking and riding. Not far south at Kande is a well run horse riding establishment where you can take horses into the surrounding hills and along the beaches.

Client Rating for Malawi 5/5 from 10 reviews

Accommodation was excellent; also the catering but I felt threatened by another wasted day. A bird walk was offered, at extra charge, and returned past some of the local houses and fishermen working on their nets, which was interesting. I was told that the weather was not calm enough for boat trips and soon discovered that the beach in front of and to either side of the hotel was too rocky to go swimming. There was a good swimming pool, but the ants around the edge were a bit off-putting. Some Dutch volunteers showed me round the tree project which they were helping with and also told me that there was a local riding stables. I had a nice quiet ride through the forest, which was very enjoyable, and riding on the beach was also an option. The horses seemed well looked after but the owners were all away and it was not in the same league as the excellent stables and customer care at Zomba.
