Bundi Vilas

India

Placed in windowless room at first. After protest, got moved (but only because someone else had moved out, dissatisfied with their room; I found it fine)

It would have been helpful to know that this hotel was located up a narrow steep alleyway, accessible only by foot and that bedrooms were up several flights of stairs (no lift). Our arrival here was not as smooth as elsewhere and there was no local rep to greet us and sort out the formalities. Breakfast was later than elsewhere and didn't start till 8. This was inconvenient for us because we had a long journey ahead, but we were told it was impossible to arrange an earlier time. We were also taken unawares by their not accepting credit cards and we only had just enough cash to pay for our meals. That said, however, we had a lovely, if small, genuine heritage room, beautifully decorated and furnished, with an adequate bathroom and we enjoyed the good buffet dinner in the rooftop restaurant while admiring the staff's ingenious methods of deterring the fort's resident monkeys from joining us.

The journey to the haveli already has you intrigued - the streets are narrow and full of life. After a short steep passageway the haveli rises impressively before you. Its elevated aspect affords you fantastic views over the city but most impressive is the view at the foot of the Bundi Garh Palace. As the day draws to an end, you can watch the monkeys by sunset return to claim the palace for themselves. As night draws in the castle is uplit and illuminates the thousands of bats tumbling out of the darkened windows - fabulous! The rooms are spacious and beautifully decorated - the water in the shower however didn't warm up very much. Our evening meal was served on the rooftop with an open fire to take away the chill. The food whilst tasty, in comparison to other meals we enjoyed on our tour of Rajasthan, was quite basic. Quirky place to stay, in a quirky city.
