Open: Asalem is open all year.

Location: Asalem is situated on the Bay of Abraao on Ilha Grande, about 2 hours’ drive (150kms) south of Rio de Janeiro. The island is reached by small ferry or speedboat.

Rooms: There are 4 standard suites air-conditioned located on the top floors to take advantage of the ocean view. Each has a downstairs lounge with floor to ceiling windows and French doors that open on to a private terrace. The bedrooms are on the upper floor, reached by an open tread staircase. The suites have hammocks, ceiling fans and minibars. In addition there is one honeymoon suite situated at the water’s edge, offering spacious and secluded accommodation and a similar premium suite. The chalet is ideal for family groups.

Activities: The main emphasis is on relaxation at the hotel or on the beach – Ilha Grande has some of the best beaches in Brazil, but many activities are available including guided walks and hikes, boat trips and a wide range of watersports. There are local villages to be explored, including Abraao just a few minutes boat ride or a 20-minute walk from Asalem. Guests can attend yoga sessions and evening lectures by visiting writers and artists, which the hotel hosts periodically.

Facilities: There is a private waterside sundeck, ideal for lazy days. Massages can be arranged on request. The hotel’s gardens are full of trees and plants and many of the ingredients used in the meals served are sourced here. The hotel backs on to the forest, so the grounds are profuse in wildlife like squirrels, monkeys, tropical birds and butterflies. Asalem has a collection of photography and Brazilian art books. Meals are based on the freshest local ingredients – fruit, vegetables, herb and seafood are prominent. The usual range of drinks is available plus cocktails made from local fruits. Al fresco dining is the norm. Daily breakfast is included with lunch and dinner available every day except Sunday.

Dining: Meals are taken at individual tables.

Children: Children of all ages are welcome.

Health:
Ilha Grande is not a malarial area.

Communication: There is free high speed and Wi-Fi internet access.

Notes: There are no banks, ATMs or money changing facilities on Ilha Grande so guests are advised to change enough money for their stay before arrival. Asalem accepts major credit cards such as American Express, Visa and MasterCard.
