Altiplanico Sur is a striking single storey building partly made with grass bricks and roofed with grass as inspired by the dwellings of early inhabitants of the area. This helps it blend sympathetically into the landscape. It is 3 kilometres from busy Puerto Natales, yet has a quiet setting by Last Hope Sound, so staying here you have the best of both worlds.

Interior design is minimalistic, and great use has been made of natural materials such as wood and slate. Communal areas have large windows and your eye is constantly drawn to the superb lake views. Regional, national and international food is served at the restaurant, accompanied by Chilean wines, and there's a bar where you can socialise with other guests. 

Hotel staff can help you explore the local area, including Torres del Paine National Park, on tours arranged by local travel agencies. On your return to the hotel you can relax and ease any muscular aches and pains with a soak in one of the hot tubs, or a massage, or curl up on a sofa in the lounge where a log burner adds warmth when needed. 

Rooms are simply styled and the decor is easy on the eye. The picture window lets you enjoy the views in complete privacy. You have an en-suite bathroom with a walk-in shower. In the bedroom heating and thick throws keep you warm and cosy, and soft furnishings add pleasing splashes of colour.
