Altiplanico San Pedro de Atacama is on the outskirts of San Pedro, giving you the best of both worlds, the option to walk into town (about 15 minutes) to enjoy different restaurants and bars, and back at your hotel, enjoy the peace and quiet.

The hotel has more of a village feel about it, the 'casitas' have been built in three blocks with space in between filled with nature. The buildings are all constructed from adobe and have straw roofs. They fit perfectly in this bone-dry landscape with the backdrop of dramatic volcanic peaks.

Each room is different, not just in the configuration of single, double, triple or family, but also in shape and layout. What they do have in common is they each have a private terrace facing the Andes, and the newer rooms also have an outdoor shower. The decor is simple and rustic, fitted benches are made from adobe, the colours echoing the rich natural tones of nature. Bright fabrics adorn the beds and add a bit of colour to the rooms. The windows are small and the walls thick, keeping the rooms cool in summer and warm in winter.

There is an outdoor swimming pool, though in winter months you may find this closed. There's also an large shaded outdoor seating area complete with an atmospheric fire pit. It's a nice spot from which to enjoy the southern constellations after dark. In the restaurant and bar, you'll often find local music adding to the ambience as you have a well-earned nightcap.

It's easy to explore the Atacama Desert from here, some trips are full on and involve and early start, but you can arrange for a packed lunch and it's always great to come back to the homely atmosphere of Altiplanico San Pedro.
