a guide to mobile camping safaris in africa

If you want to be sure of being very close to nature and wildlife, and away from all mod cons, your very best bet is to choose a mobile camping safari.

Of course this means that this experience is not for everyone. But, wow, if you get that experience of being in your tent and you can listen to wildlife snuffling about outside (you’re safe, honest!), you know that you will have tales to tell and you really have had a proper taste of Africa!

Types and standards of mobile camping safaris

With all such safaris you will be sleeping in a tent, and moving from place to place – though not necessarily each night. However after that these two points, there are lots of variations in terms of the standards and facilities that you can expect from different mobile camping safaris.

The other thing that these safaris can boast of offering is a very eco-friendly and sustainable experience. Certainly the mobile camping safaris that Tribes offers are anyway (sadly not all campers are conscious of their potential negative impact on their environment).

And did you know that whilst most mobile camping trips are group departures with set dates and itineraries, Tribes can also offer them as private trips at a date to suit you, and with an itinerary of your choice. Do ask us about this if you’d like to know more about this.

Mobile Camping Accommodation

To most of us the idea of camping means you will be ‘roughing it’. Yes, we can offer some camping trips where the services and facilities are basic and you have to help out with putting up tents and cooking. However we also offer camping safaris which could be classed as luxury!

Budget trips: These are mostly full participation camping trips. This means that you have to put up and take down your own tent, and you have to help out with preparing meals, cooking and washing up. Usually your tent will be a dome tent (often 2.5m x 2.5m) and you are given a mattress and sometimes a bedroll but more often will need to bring a sleeping bag. A tent with probably a small pit latrine will be share amongst a few tents, and there will be a shared bucket shower tent too.

Mid-range trips: These are generally semi-participation mobile camping trips. You have the same kind of tents as the budget trips, but usually with a stretcher bed, and either personal bathroom facilities or facilities shared between only 2 tents. There will be camp staff to help with tents and all chores, and you will not really be expected to help with cooking or washing up.

Luxury trips: On the pricier end of the camping safaris, you have a larger tent (often walk-in), a proper bed (or stretcher bed) and sheets and duvets or blankets, a private en-suite bathroom with chemical loo and bucket shower, some kind of lighting, and camp staff to put up all the tents, do all the chores, and a chef to cook magnificent three-course meals over the campfire. Some of the luxury trips we offer are group trips, but we can also offer them as private safaris too.

Guiding, group size and vehicle on a mobile safari

The cheaper trips will have more travellers. However Tribes tends only to sell group trips with between 8 and 12 people as smaller groups certainly have a lesser impact on the environment. We feel this is very important. None of us want to come to these special wilderness places and cause problems of pollution, habitat destruction or hurt wildlife.

The vehicles vary depending on group size, from larger customized Land Rovers with bench seating, to standard Land Cruisers or Land Rovers for between 4 and 6 travellers.

The guides usually do the driving, and the people we use are excellent guides with a lot of knowledge.
