Kaingo Camp

Luangwa Valley

Rating: Deluxe

Kaingo Camp overview

Overlooking the Luangwa River deep in the South Luangwa National Park is this small friendly camp. The 6 chalets were refurbished in 2012. The chitenje housing the lounge, dining area and bar features new furniture and furnishings.

The chalets are spacious, well ventilated and light, with large, mosquito-proofed windows looking out to the Luangwa River, allowing the sounds of the night and the breeze filter through. Each has a private wooden deck overlooking the river which gives a great vantage point to relax and watch hippos, crocodiles, hundreds of birds and often elephant crossing the water. There is also a more spacious deluxe suite with similar facilties plus a lounge and a larger private deck which can be used as a family chalet, accommodating up to 6 guests.

The chitenje is a large round buidling, open-sided offering great views of the surrounding area. Here guests can relax in the lounge/library and enjoy a drink and chat in the bar. The main dining area is located in the chitenje, though meals can also be taken on the main deck or in the privacy of your chalet's deck.

Three activities a day are offered (early morning, lunch time and late afternoon) which are optional, you can simply relax at camp and let the wildlife come to you if you prefer! Photographic hides allow close up views of many species. Kaingo combines well with sister camp Mwamba, a bush camp and you may walk between the two locations.

Owner managed and run, Shenton Safaris are long established in the Luangwa valley. Derek Shenton and his team of guides are able to combine their skills and intimate knowledge of the area to provide exciting and thought provoking safari walks and game- drives, while his wife Jules and her team of attentive staff take care of all your comforts in camp. Much of the fresh produce used in the kitchens is grown in the Shenton Plot near Mfuwe airport and hand crafted materials are used in the rooms.

Open: Kaingo Camp is open from 20th May to 31st October each year.

Location: Kaingo Camp is on the banks of the Luangwa River in South Luangwa National Park. The camp is about a 3 hour drive from Mfuwe airport.

Rooms: There are 5 standard brick and thatch chalets with large screened windows, wooden furniture, an indoor en-suite bathroom with a shower, hand basin and flush toilet and an outdoor bathtub. The private decks are built our over the river. There is also a deluxe suite with a siting room and larger deck which can be converted into a family chalet sleeping up to 6 people.

Activities: The camp offers early morning and late afternoon game drives. Walking safaris with an armed scout and guide are a good way to explore this area. There are elephant and hippo hides near camp for close-up views of wildlife. This is a good camp for bird watching. Three separate game watching activities are offered each day.

Facilities: The main lounge and dining area, or chitenge, is spacious and open-sided with a high thatched roof. The lounge has a selection of books and magazines. There is also a bar. The camp has a large deck built out over the river where afternoon tea is served. The camp offers a laundry service.

Dining: Meals are taken communally in the chitenge and on the deck.

Children: Children over the age of 8 are welcome. It should be noted that Kaingo is not fenced and children must be kept under supervision at all times.

Health: This is a malarial area.

Communication: There is internet access for use by guests in emergencies only.

"A wonderful camp with such jolly and friendly staff. The arrangement of having lunch on your own private decking whilst watching game coming to drink in the river was a memorable experience indeed. And the water from the tap was safe to drink as it came from their own borehole."
Jenny Cox
"For both Shenton camps, no praise is high enough! All the superlatives in the world couldn't even come close to these camps. The wildlife is fabulous and the level of guiding superb. The food is delicious and plentiful and the accommodation wonderful but what makes these camps so special is the people. We arrived as guests but soon felt we were friends - a truly wonderful experience."
Jenny Cox
"Where do I start? The wildlife as I said before was superb, we saw just so much. The guides we had there (Meyem, Noelle and Sylvester) were just the best, they absolutely worked their socks off to get us the best viewing possible - and they certainly suceeded. The camps at Kaingo and Mwamba are made so special by the wonderful people there and as great as the game viewing was, the holiday was made so special by the lovely people at both camps. Also special thanks to Izzy and Rob - just for being so hard working, considerate and fabulous!"
Tracy Edwards, Tribes
"One of the last few owner run camps in the park! This gives it a slightly different feel to other camps as you don’t just feel like a guest, you feel like a friend as soon as you walk through the ‘door’. The guiding here is fabulous, with a real passion for photography and the hide’s, the hippo hide in particular, was my favourite aspect. I could have stayed at the hippo hide all day! "
