Flatdogs Camp

Luangwa Valley

Rating: Modest

Flatdogs Camp overview

A friendly and good value safari camp on the outskirts of South Luangwa National Park.

This is one of the cheaper places to stay to enjoy a safari n South Luangwa. Previously it was known as being very backpacky and orientated towards large groups, and we tended not to recommend it. However, things have changed in recent years, and it is now definitely worth considering.

There is good choice of accommodation types here, from luxury safari tents to chalets and a lovely treehouse. With about 20 rooms in total, this is one of the larger camps in the valley, but it remains friendly. The restaurant, bar and shop area is the hub of the place, and there is also a swimming pool to cool off in. The staff are very keen to make your stay a good one.

Two activities a day are included in your stay. Day and night game drives are available every day the camp is open, and in addition to this walking safaris are offered from about June to October.

If you are looking for high quality and a very personal experience in a small camp, Flatdogs is not right for you. However if you want a comfortable, no frills, friendly place to stay as a base to explore South Luangwa's rich wildlife and wilderness, Flatdogs could be ideal for you.

Open: Closes mid-January to mid-March each year.

Location: Just outside of South Luangwa National Park, so ideal for gameviewing particularly in the central section of the park.

Rooms: 6 regular chalets and one family chalet; JackalBerry treehouse has two bedrooms (open 5th April to 15th November) and is great for an older family or a small party of friends to share; 6 luxury safari tents and 1 luxury family tent; and there are 5 standard safari tents.

Activities: Day and night game drives are offered in South Luangwa National Park. They last roughly 4 hours.  Also, from June to October there are walking safaris available if you'd like to get closer to the wilds of Africa!

Facilities: There is a restaurant, bar, gift shop and a swimming pool.

Dining: Meals are served in the restaurant, or in the courtyard or gardens.  The restaurant is open all day, so you can order food when you like.

Children: The camp welcomes children, and there is even a nanny facility if you want a peaceful evening in camp.

Health: This is a malarial area.

Communication: There is limited mobile reception.
