Botswana: It’s rainy season, though this doesn’t mean you can’t get some great wildlife viewing, and you can get some very good prices! The zebra migration is in the Makgadikgadi and Nxai Pans, the fresh grasses in the Kalahari has attracted lots of wildlife, and birding is excellent in December.
Kenya & Tanzania: The short rains have hopefully stopped so it’s a good time to visit. The drier areas of Laikipia, Samburu and Meru up in northern Kenya are lovely at this time, but most of the major reserves are good now until the rain begins again in about mid-march/April.
South Africa & Swaziland: Kruger, the north and east will be a bit rainy, but game can still be reasonable. Try game viewing in the Eastern Cape which is dry at this time, so reserves such as Shamwari, Addo, Kariega, Kwandwe and Samara are all good in December.
Zambia: The rains have started but this is one of the best months for visiting the remote Liuwa Plains as the wildebeest migration is here in December. The bat migration is in Kasanka until roughly mid-month.
Costa Rica: Costa Rica has excellent bird life and wildlife sightings in the gorgeous forests and parks.
Ecuador & Galapagos Islands: The Galapagos Islands offer a year-round wildlife spectacle which is hard to beat. Giant tortoise eggs hatch from now until about April. The breeding season starts and ends this month for many species. Combine this with time to explore the mainland to see the wildlife of the Amazonian rainforest plus the Andean regions with Andean markets and haciendas.
Peru: Whilst December is one of the wetter months, you can still see some good wildlife in the Amazon rainforest here, and great birding in the cloud forest too.
India: Wildlife viewing in December is good in India. From November until about April/May the reserves are open and can offer some superb wildlife sights, especially later in the season. Gir National Park in Gujarat is particularly good in December.
Nepal: December is a good month for wildlife in Nepal and temperatures are comfortable.
Mauritius: Mauritius is good most of the year, with May to December being the best months. Tropical storms can begin by mid-month, but December is still a very popular time to visit Mauritius.
South Africa: The eastern region of KwaZulu Natal has stunning coastline. Try rustic cabins at Kosi Bay or luxury lodges of Kosi Forest or Thonga Beach. Whilst this area is in a wetter season, this coastline almost always has decent weather with just occasional short sharp showers. The Cape region has lovely Mediterranean summer weather at this time.
Tanzania & Kenya: The Indian Ocean islands and mainland coastline are lovely to visit in December. Try Lamu or Diani Beach in Kenya, or in Tanzania perhaps try Zanzibar, Pemba or Mafia Island.
Brazil: December is a good time to go to Rio and the Costa Verde in Brazil for relaxation and beaches.
Costa Rica: There are some lovely beaches on both the Pacific Ocean and Caribbean Sea sides.
India: The beaches at Kerala are hot and a great place to chill out at this time of year.
Jordan: Much of Jordan can be chilly in December, but Aqaba on the Red Sea can get some nice warm days for an escape relatively close to Europe.
Morocco in winter: yes it’s cold and can be rainy and even snowy in the hills, but think of all the shopping in the souks, warm fires in cozy riads, and wonderful food. And the weather is generally not as bad as in the UK!
South Africa: Head for Mpumalanga region, west of Kruger, to see sights like the Blyde River Canyon, Bourke’s Luck Potholes and God’s Window on the so-called Panorama Route. This links nicely with wildlife viewing in Kruger. Some rain is likely, but it’s still a good month. Cape Town, the Garden Route and Winelands are in great weather until about March – very Mediterranean climate.
Brazil: Maybe come to Brazil to explore Rio and Iguazu Falls, and combine this with some wildlife in the Pantanal or Amazon.
Ecuador:Ecuador is good all year. Visit Indian markets and colonial cities such as Cuenca, or hike in the Andes or take in the Galapagos.
Peru: Come and explore Peru’s Incan and colonial history and find out about modern life in Cusco, the Sacred Valley, Arequipa, at Lake Titicaca …
Bhutan:It’s chilly here in December but you can still have a great time here.
India: The summer heat and rain has stopped, and November is a good month to visit.
Nepal: Nepal is cold in December, but if you don’t mind that it’s chilly, it’s a lovely time to visit.
Morocco: December is cold and it’s not good for trying to climb Mount Toubkal, but you can explore the lower reaches of the Atlas, the desert and of course the cities.
South Africa:The Cape region is wonderfully warm, and there is loads to explore here. KwaZulu Natal good for walks cycling, horse riding and other activities would be excellent. Combine with some beach time or a safari for an exciting African adventure.
Ecuador:Try hiking in the Andes, exploring the Amazon, taking a train ride through the Andes, and maybe combine all this with time in the Galapagos Islands.
Peru: It’s a good month to be in Peru. How about the challenge of the Inca Trail?
India: It’s a good month for travel throughout India.
