Unguja Lodge

Zanzibar & the Coast

Rating: Deluxe

Unguja Lodge overview

Unguja Resort is an small scale traditionally designed hotel in Kizimkazi on the southern tip of Zanzibar. Accommodation is in 12 spacious private bungalows, each with its own terrace with views over the Indian Ocean or tropical gardens. All bungalows are beautifully decorated in Zanzibar style. There are 6 sea view villas, 3 baobab villas and 2 family villas.

The resort has a lovely garden with old mango and baobab trees in which many indigenous animals find their home. The rare red colobus monkeys often come and play as do the black tailed monkeys. A nature trail leads down to the white beach. In the middle of the tropical garden is a large swimming pool, where guests can relax while enjoying the services from our bar and restaurant.

There is a dive centre on site. After diving or snorkelling, watching dolphins or after a relaxing day on the beach guests can make themselves at home in the bar area overlooking the ocean and enjoy an excellent cocktail. The restaurant serves an excellent breakfast, lunch and dinner. The chef makes use of many local Zanzibar ingredients such as fresh seafood and exotic spices. A private barbeque lunch on one of the small deserted islands near the southern coast can be organized for guests.

Unguja does regular village, beach and reef clean-ups, protects indigenous wildlife on site and pays Menai Bay conservation fees for every guest. Water is a big problem in Zanzibar & the lodge often buys a truck of water for the village. They also contribute to education & medical projects.

"Wow! What can we say. There aren\'t words enough to praise this place. It was a beautiful setting and we were treated extremely well. The warmth and friendliness were amazing. We truly have left a piece of our hearts in this place. Must return!"

"Yes, yes, yes! What a beautiful place! When I think of visiting Africa, and spending some time on the beautiful beaches, this is what I would picture. Small, personal and beautifully done, this place is a small area of Zanzibar heaven. Wonderful staff, fantastic beaches, fresh seafood daily, rustic yet luxury rooms - I’m not sure I could want for anything else! Elies, Ralph and their team have got something very special here!"

"The lodges were HUGE and the views over the indian ocean breathtaking. We did our PADI whilst there and found the dive school to be Unguja's crowning glory - the dive instructors, equipment and dive sites were all top notch. Whilst the menu didn't contain a great deal of options, we found all of the food to be really great, especially the seafood which was fresh and local. The resort is very relaxed which was exactly what we needed after safari and gorilla trekking. A great resort run by great people (Ralph and Elies)."

"Ralph and Eljies (that is probably spelt wrong!) made us feel so welcome in Unguja, and our stay here was one of the highlights of our trip. The accomodation was spectacular, with our hut facing straight out to the ocean. The staff left coffee on the doorstep each morning, and we spent most mornings sitting outside our hut drinking coffee and watching the dolphins swim by. I also did a lot of diving with Nick (the on-site dive master) which was brilliant, and we went on a trip to swim with the dolphins to the south too. The food and staff were amazing. We spent most evenings sat by the pool chatting away with the other guests and Ralph and Eljies drinking the cocktails of the day. We will definitely be going back to Unguja. We made friends with some of the other guests (lots of honeymooners!) and got to look around the other huts. Those away from the ocean had a cool plunge pool, but we would pick the ocean view everytime."
