The Zanzibari

Zanzibar & the Coast

Rating: Mid-range

The Zanzibari overview

With rooms and suites spread across the grounds, The Zanzibari is a peaceful and relaxing place to stay, perched on the northern tip of Zanzibar. Set on a cliff, The Zanzibari has wonderful views out over the Indian Ocean.

All rooms are air conditioned and have spacious ensuite bathrooms. Each room has its own private balcony facing the lush gardens and sea beyond. The 2 Frangipane Suites are set slightly apart from the main building to provide seclusion. Each has its own terrace, plunge pool and private beach area. They are well suited to families of groups of friends travelling together. The Bustani Suite is a single storey villa with an open plan lounge and a private terrace, set in the hotel gardens.

There is PADI dive centre nearby and there is also good snorkelling in the area. Kayaking, windsurfing and fishing are also popular activities. The Zanzibari can arrange a number of excursions including a spice tour, historical tour and cultural visit to a nearby village. Guests can also take relaxing dhow cruises. The fishing village of Nungwi can be reached in a few minutes, walking along the beach at low tide. The hotel has a lovely infinity pool set in the lush tropical gardens and plenty of sunny and shaded seating areas.

The spa at the Zanzibari offers a range of treatments. Private and group yoga classes are also available, incorporating breathing techniques, flowing postures, sun salutations and relaxation. Reiki is also offered to guests. This is a simple, non-invasive healing system and benefits include deep relaxation and the release of tension, better sleep, reduced blood pressure and the acceleration of the body's self-healing abilities.

The cuisine is continental with an emphasis on fresh seafood, served in the airy, open-sided dining room. Outside main meal times a variety of snacks is available. The dhow bar is well stocked with wines, beers and spirits as well as juices and refreshing non alcoholic drinks. Guests can relax in the lounge, which has a TV and internet access.

Open: The Zanzibari is open all year.

Location: The Zanzibari is in Nungwi, on the north eastern tip of Zanzibar. It is about a 75 minute drive from Stone Town and the airport. The hotel is set in pretty gardens on a low cliff overlooking the Indian Ocean. The sea here is tidal.

Rooms: There are 11 rooms and 3 suites, with views of either the gardens or sea. All are spacious and light, with white tiled floors and large glass doors opening onto a balcony or patio. Bathrooms are large and come with a supply of toiletries. All rooms are air conditioned, have TVs, fridges and mosquito nets. The rooms are in the main block, Bougainvillea House, while suites are set slightly apart, have even more space and private plunge pools. Two of the suites (Frangipani) are twin-storey and face the ocean, the other, the Bustani Suite, is a single storey building with a private garden and an open plan living area. All suites sleep up to 5.

Activities: You can simply sunbathe, swim in the pool or beach (jelly shoes are advisable for the latter) and enjoy the peace and quiet at The Zanzibari, but if you feel more energetic you can go for a walk along the beach (at low tide), or road into the village of Nungwi. As well as seeing the fishing boats you can visit the turtle sanctuary that looks after young and injured creatures, rehabilitating them to go back into the wild. The main resort is a little further along the beach and here there are cafes and shops as well as several hotels. Staff can arrange a number of island excursions and boat trips on request. Watersports include snorkelling, diving and kayaking.

Facilities: The main building houses the reception area and the large, thatched-roofed, open-sided restaurant and lounge. As well as dining tables and chairs there are cushioned sofas where you can sit and relax, and a bar that is in an old dhow in the centre of the room. In one corner there’s a large TV where live sporting events are screened. All the furniture in here is made from reclaimed dhow wood. The hotel gardens are full of flowers and sandy paths lead to several areas where you’ll find deck chairs and sun loungers. The pool has shaded and sunny decks and there’s a pool bar. Towards the beach there’s a spa banda, where you can enjoy beauty treatments and massages. At the edge of the shallow cliff there are 3 rock pools, ideal for a cooling soak. There is a laundry service (pay locally).

Dining: Meals are eaten at separate tables in the restaurant. You’ll have a choice of dishes for breakfast and a large blackboard advertises lunch and dinner dishes. Lunch is usually a snack or light meal and dinner is a 3-course affair, and you’ll be asked for your choice during the day. Local and international cuisines are available. Breakfast, afternoon tea and dinner are included in the lodge rates. Lunch is to be paid for locally.

Children: Children of all ages are welcome. Baby sitting can be arranged. There is a children’s menu, with dinner served between 18:00 and 18:30hrs

Health: This is a malarial area.

Communication: There is free Wi-Fi internet access.

Knowing the big water problems faced by the island, this hotel installed a de-salinator. They also use solar & wind power to reduce their impact, so they are really trying to keep their impact as low as possible.

Mr. Keith Sandell

"Unfortunately at this time of the year the beach had been washed away.TRIBES REPLY: This is a natural phenomenon. The northern Kaskazi winds can sometimes blow sand away revealing rock beneath from about January to April. From June through the rest of the year the beach is sandy though. "

"Relaxed, friendly and peaceful. This is lovely, small and personal choice, with activities nearby and an emphasis on ‘chill out’. The food was fantastic with options for all diets and the staff were funny and friendly. I wanted to stay longer. "
Brian & Barbara Barker
"The accommodation was really nice here - the beds were comfy, and very prettily decorated with flowers on arrival. The gardens are well laid out with a nice swimming pool area and seating area overlooking the sea. There is not a sandy beach here though. The food was very good, with a good choice of breakfasts and 3 choices of main meal in the evenings. The bar area was made from a Dhow - including sail which was very unusual and attractive. The main problem whilst we were there was the unreliable electricity supply. "
Mr. Nick Hay
"Just the place to spend a couple of days relaxing after a few days safari. Beautiful setting, fantastic views and close to the turtle sanctuary which was brilliant."
Lynn Emery
"Welcome to paradise. After a week on safari this was just heaven. Our large room overlooked a beautiful garden and had been decorated with flowers. We had a kettle and a fridge and a door on the bathroom!!! Greeted by Paulo and a cold drink he explained what they could offer us by way of trips and how the hotel works, and believe him when he says they want to make your stay special. The hotel serves wonderful food in a dining room full of furniture made from old dhows infact the furniture through out, from beds to sun loungers, is made from this aged recylced wood. There is a pool and a man-made beach and at low tide steps lead down to clean white sand where you can walk in either direction. At this hotel you can be as active or as lazy as you wish. We took some trips which were professionally organised with private guides and cars to ensure our safety. We were also given a local Massai who took us for a walk around the village and we were able to visit places we would never have ventured on our own. On site we were treated to cocounuts cut straight from the tree just for us to drink, you can\'t get fresher than that. On our final evening we had dinner next to a fire on their beach, treated to our own dancing Massai and special sea food dinner. With the waves of the ocean crashing. the breeze tapping the palm tree fronds together and the stars out this was a perfect end to a perfect holiday. "
