The Slipway

Zanzibar & the Coast

Rating: Modest

The Slipway overview

The Slipway Hotel is on the Msasani Peninsula, with lovely views over the bay. It's away from the hustle and bustle of central Dar es Salaam, so is well suited for those who wish a more peaceful stay in the capital, and with all the facilities you need on site, there's no need to venture into the city unless you wish to.

There's a choice of accommodation, from economy rooms to seaview suites. Standard features include air conditioning, satellite TV, tea and coffee maker, minibar, safe and an en-suite bathroom. You also have free Wi-Fi internet access, handing for keeping in touch with those back at home. Some rooms have balconies, and suites provide the most space including a sitting room and a balcony.

With a choice of two restaurants you should be able to find the ambience and cuisine you prefer, and there are bars and cafes for lighter refreshments. When it comes to recreation there's an outdoor swimming pool and a gym with a range of exercise machines. While here you can spoil yourself with a visit to the spa.

The hotel is a located next to the shopping complex of the same name, where you can browse for souvenirs, clothes and books. The bank, supermarket and pharmacy provide useful services, all on your doorstep.

The Slipway began life as a boatyard and you can still sail from the jetty here. There are trips out to the nearby Bongoyo Island, the first marine reserve in Tanzania. It is also possible to go diving, sailing and fishing nearby.

Please note that the hotel can be up to a two hour drive from the airport, depending on traffic conditions, therefore we don't recomend The Slipway for day room use.

Mr. Nick Hay

"Nice place to spend the night. I would highly recommend that you spend the night here before making the train journey to Kisaki. Otherwise I think it would be a very long journey from Europe to Sable Mountain Lodge."

Mrs. Karen Coe
"This is relatively basic, but it is very comfortable and, unlike the chain hotels, it has its own local charm, so you feel that your holiday has started, even though it's really being used only as a crash pad before heading off into 'real' Africa. The Waterfront restaurant adjacent to the hotel is friendly and serves great grilled tuna, and the hotel's breakfasts are good."
Natalie
"Good place to rest after flying in. Simple but ok hotel."
Sophie Vanden Eynde
"I can not say much as we stayed only one night, arriving late (all shops closed) and leaving early before breakfast to catch our flight to Ruaha. It would have been better for us to stay closer to the airport.

TRIBES REPLY: Sadly there is no hotel near Dar airport yet. Hopefully this will happen one day!"
Polly Nightingale, Tribes
"

Comfy accommodation, nothing fancy but clean and functional.  It's in a pleasant location on the peninsula with waterfront restaurants and shops, away from the noise and traffic of the city. It's a good overnight stop after a long flight, or before a flight home.
