The Seyyida Hotel

Zanzibar & the Coast

Rating: Mid-range

The Seyyida Hotel overview

The Seyyida is a 17-room, mid-range boutique hotel in the heart of historic Stone Town on Zanzibar island. The building, a renovated 4-storey townhouse, is next to the Palace Museum (the former home of the Zanzibari Royal Family) and close to the Forodhani Gardens, House of Wonders, the Old Fort and waterfront area. Just bear in mind that being in the heart of the town means that this is not the quietest place you could choose.

The rooms include a mezzanine suite with private terrace, a family suite, 4 balcony Stone Town view rooms, 4 balcony seaview rooms, 2 garden view rooms and 4 deluxe rooms. All rooms have large king size beds, luxurious bathrooms, TV and internet connection, mosquito nets and ceiling fans, air conditioning, mini bar, coffee maker and safes. They are decorated with traditional Swahili style furnishings.

There is a rooftop restaurant with lovely views over the town, harbour and Indian Ocean, and an elegant lounge bar where you can meet and chat with fellow guests over a relaxing drink. There is a small pool in the courtyard garden, a real plus for a town centre property. The hotel has a spa offering a wide range of health and beauty treatments.

Open: The Seyyida is open all year. The low season is March to May and the spa is not open in these months.

Location: The Seyyida is in the heart of historic Stone Town next to the Palace Museum.

Activities: The sites and shops of Stone Town are within walking distance. You can stroll through the narrow alleyways and along the waterfront in the Forodhani Gardens. The Palace Museum is just next door. The hotel can arrange various excursions to place of interest on the island.

Tracy Edwards

"A lovely, quaint, traditional hotel in the heart of Stone Town. Very close to the bustling waterfront with friendly staff and great service. The rooftop bar and restaurant was a real treat watching the sunset. Note, not ideal for people with limited mobility."

Mrs. Sue Holloway
"WE had a lovely room, large and comfortable. Dinner on the rooftop terrace overlooking the sea was magical. Then they let themselves down by forgetting our wake up call, fairly crucial since we had a 5 a.m. pick up, and then the promised breakfast packages were nowhere to be seen when we left."
Katie Austin
"The room was lovely - huge, clean and furnished beautifully. We arrived very late (approx 10pm) due to a delayed flight but information on arrival was limited. We sat downstairs in the bar for a drink before bed, however there wasn't any other guests in sight. We had to ask someone from reception to serve us a drink as the bar wasn't staffed. However, we realised in the morning that there was a rooftop bar which may have been where the staff and guests all were! Had we have been given more info on arrival, we would probably have had our drinks on the roof. This is really the only small criticism we have of the hotel. The room, location and view from the rooftop was wonderful."
Louise Eldred
"Decent base and retreat from the bustle of the teeming town. Rooftop bar/restaurant was great."
Heather McNally
"A good location in Stonetown. Hotel is clean, but service is a little slow, but a good choice in a challenging location!"
