Southern Sun (previously known as Holiday Inn) is conveniently located just 14 kilometres from Dar es Salaam International Airport in the commercial centre of the city, next to the botanical gardens. Ste in gardens of its own, the hotel has a good range of facilities and makes a convenient and comfortable stopover hotel at the beginning or end of your holiday in Tanzania.
The Southern Sun has 152 guest rooms divided into three categories. Standard rooms are en-suite and air conditioned, have tea and coffee maker, minibar, TV and free Wi-Fi, and some have a small balcony. Executive rooms have similar facilties and offer greater space, and the suites are the largest with a lounge and upgraded room amenites. The hotel provides 24 hour room service.
The hotel is a good place to relax. You can stroll in the gardens, sunbathe and swim in the outdoor pool. If you prefer more vigorous exercise you can head to the gym where there's a good range of exercise equipment and weights, or go for a jog in the neighbourhood using a map from reception. The botanical gardens are worth a visit and the hotel concierge can advise on other places of interest nearby and arrange excursions.
When it comes to dining you can savour fish and seafood at Baraza, which also offers a choice of fresh, seasonal fare. The cafe is the ideal place for a light lunch or snack and has a selection of hot drinks and juices, while the bar serves beer, wine and cocktails to enjoy as you chat to other guests.

Rooms: Rooms and suites have windows with views of the botanic gardens or city, are air conditioned and have blackout curtains. Each has a flatscreen TV, minibar (stocked on request), hot drinks maker, safe, hairdryer, free Wi-Fi and en-suite bathroom. There is round the clock room service. There are standard rooms (twins and doubles) and large executive rooms which include a living area. The two suites are more spacious yet, with a quiet reading area and separate lounge. There are interconnecting rooms, useful for families. Some rooms have been adapted to accommodate wheelchairs.
Activities: Swim in the pool, stroll in the gardens, work out the gym, go jogging and visit the botanical gardens nearby. The concierge can arrange tours and provide local information.
Facilities: These include a restaurant (see below), cafe, lounge, bar and terrace. The hotel has an outdoor swimming pool, sun loungers and shaded seating in the gardens and a well equipped gym open 24-7. Staff can provide a jogging trail map of the local area. There are laundry and dry cleaning services. The hotel has a money exchange.
Dining: Meals are eaten at individual tables at Baraza restaurant, which specialises in grilled seafood and seasonal produce. There are occasional braais by the pool. The cafe provides light meals and snacks to be eaten indoors and on the terrace.
Children: Children of all ages are welcome. Cots can be provided and baby sitting arranged.
Health: This is a low risk malaria area.
