Plantation Lodge

Serengeti & the North

Rating: Deluxe

Plantation Lodge overview

Plantation Lodge is surrounded by coffee plantations and the famous green hills of Africa that Hemingway found so inspiring. Its romantic setting and high standards of accommodation, food and service make it a very popular spot.

This small hotel has a choice of room styles, from standard rooms to more opulent suites and family suites. The accommodation is divided into different self-contained houses, so the place has a private feel and, if you want you can be totally independent with your own dining room and sitting room with bookshelves and a fireplace as well of plenty of outside sitting space on the verandas. There's even a little hatch in the wall of the rooms so that drinks can be delivered without disturbing the guests in their bedrooms.

There is also the garden house, with four double suites, all en suite and a large dining room. This is ideal for a family or large group. Every room has its own style. African safari-antiques and Tanzanian arts and crafts dominate the room, without neglecting modern European comfort.

Food and service are of a high standard, with much of the produce grown in the 45-acre grounds.

There is a swimming pool with stunning views of the valleys, set in the extensive, park-like gardens. Guests can walk beneath the avocado and eucalyptus trees and listen to the voices of over 40 different kinds of domestic birds.

Open:  All year round.

Location:  On the outskirts of Karatu village on the lower outer slopes of the Ngorongoro Crater. It is about a three hour drive from Arusha and less than one hour to the crater.

Rooms:  There are standard rooms, six suites, a family unit, family suite and the garden house with four bedrooms.

Activities:   Many people use Plantation Lodge as a base from which to visit the Ngorongoro Crater, but it also makes a good place to relax. Birdwatching is good around camp, there is a pool, spa treatments can be arranged for you, and if you fancy a visit to a local farm or coffee plantation, this too can be arranged.

Facilities:  The lodge is set in large landscaped gardens which houses a beautiful restaurant overlooking the rolling hills. There is a cosy bar and an extensive wine cellar. Set in the gardens is a large pool with loungers.

Dining:  Meals are served in the dining room or in the courtyard. The meals are excellent, and mostly made with local produce - some from the farm itself.

Children:  The lodge welcomes children of all ages.

Health: This is a malarial area.

Communication: There is a mobile reception, no direct ‘phone or fax and complimentary Wifi.

Dr. Andrew Thomas

"Beautiful setting with a lovely suite and good standards"

Amanda Marks, Tribes
"As we sat at a table on the lawn having lunch it felt as if we were house guests of someone with a very lovely farm in the Ngorongoro foothills. The food was delicious, the place is stylish in every way, the staff attentive and the rooms are a cool, elegant and airy retreat. The obvious personal touches come from the fact that the owner still lives here much of the time, so really that feeling of being a house guest is kind of based on reality! Highly recommended."
Georgina Jaffee
"Great hotel giving a sense of why the colonialists loved this part of East Africa...wonderful atmosphere, lovely pool and walks, magnigicent gardens and very good food."
Fiona McNeill
"Beautiful food and accommodation, our favourite place. "
Mrs. Yvonne Chapman
"A beautiful spot just outside the crater; perfect to relax after a few days\' game viewing. We were upgraded to a suite, so had an especially luxurious room. Pretty gardens, a nice swimming pool, and good food. What more could you want?"
