Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge

Serengeti & the North

Rating: Mid-range

Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge overview

Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge is unique in being the only tourist development on the eastern rim of the crater and offers magnificent views down into the crater floor and spectacular sunsets over the western horizon. Crater safaris, the main activity, begin within five minutes of the lodge, another major advantage of staying here.

This large lodge has just under 100 guest rooms, each with central heating, useful on chilly evenings, a private lounge with mini bar and an en-suite bathroom. Rooms also have private verandas, some with stunning views down into the crater floor or of the setting sun.

The central building houses the large reception area, a gift shop, the lounge bar and dining room. The dining room has tables arranged around an open fire and a glass-fronted area allowing diners to enjoy the wonderful views. The lounge bar has a similar layout and view and is a great place to chat over a drink. There is an outdoor swimming pool, sharing the wonderful crater views.

Open: Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge is open all year.

Location: Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge is only tourist accommodation on the eastern rim of the crater. It is about a 90 minute drive from the Manyara airstrip.

Rooms: There are 97 rooms in 2 large 2-storey wings. They all have en-suite bathrooms with showers, basins and flush toilets. Hot water is available in mornings and evenings. They have private glass-fronted verandas, look out over the crater (though the views of some are obscured by trees). Rooms have heating, which is welcome on cool mornings and evenings.

Activities: The principle activity is wildlife viewing in Ngorongoro Crater. The lodge offers full and half-day game drives and has its own access road. Guided walks in the highlands are also available.

Facilities: The lodge has attractive gardens and an outdoor swimming pool which has views over the crater. The dining room and lounge bar both have large picture windows to make the most of the wonderful views, and open fires for cooler evenings. There is a gift shop selling a range of souvenirs and safari goods. The lodge offers a laundry service, to be paid for locally.

Dining: Meals are taken at separate tables. Most meals are served buffet style.

Children: Children of all ages are welcome. Babysitting is available on request.

Health: This is a malarial area.

Communication: There is internet access in the dedicated internet room in the main building.

"Fortunately we only had one night here. It was OK but like a big chain hotel almost anywhere in the world, apart from it's setting. On the plus side we were at a v convenient place for entry to Ngorongoro crater without a long drive."

E Warren
"Great location, perfect for getting down to the crater nice and early, would stay here again just because of its access road. Only downside is the size of the hotel and how busy it is."
Ian McGookin
"The Sopa Lodge had incredible views over the crater, and this was worth the stay alone. The accomodation and food was great. It had a different feel from all the other places - it was very busy, and felt somewhat less personal. We got to know all the staff in the smaller lodges and camps, whereas the Sopa Lodge was a much larger operation. It isn't so much a criticism, as we had a great night here - more of an observation!"
Amanda Marks, Tribes
"Of all the lodges on the Crater rim this is the only one on the eastern side, so whilst the other lodges get to see the sunrise (weather permitting), the Sopa gets the sunset. I tend to prefer smaller, more personal lodges, but I would have to say that it takes a lot to beat the Sopa's situation and for this reason alone it is worth choosing this lodge. It is the cheaper of the three good lodges with a Crater view, the others being the luxury Crater Lodge and the Serena (we don't recommend the fourth lodge, Wildlife Lodge).
The hotel is well run, the food is good and the rooms are large and comfortable. What more do you need when you can also feast your eyes on one of the world's greatest natural sights?"
Eunice Jorna
"A bit touristy but that is to be expected given the location. Amazing views."
