Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge

Serengeti & the North

Rating: Mid-range

Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge overview

Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge is unique in being the only tourist development on the eastern rim of the crater and offers magnificent views down into the crater floor and spectacular sunsets over the western horizon. Crater safaris, the main activity, begin within five minutes of the lodge, another major advantage of staying here.

This large lodge has just under 100 guest rooms, each with central heating, useful on chilly evenings, a private lounge with mini bar and an en-suite bathroom. Rooms also have private verandas with views down into the crater floor or of the setting sun.

The central building houses the large reception area, a gift shop, the lounge bar and dining room. The dining room has tables arranged around an open fire and a glass-fronted area allowing diners to enjoy the wonderful views. The lounge bar has a similar layout and view and is a great place to chat over a drink. There is an outdoor swimming pool, sharing the wonderful crater views.

Open: Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge is open all year.

Location: Ngorongoro Sopa Lodge is only tourist accommodation on the eastern rim of the crater. It is about a 90 minute drive from the Manyara airstrip.

Private glass-fronted verandas look out over the crater. Rooms have heating, which is welcome on cool mornings and evenings.

Activities: The principle activity is wildlife viewing in Ngorongoro Crater. The lodge offers full and half-day game drives and has its own access road. Guided walks in the highlands are also available.

Facilities: The lodge has attractive gardens and an outdoor swimming pool which has views over the crater. The dining room and lounge bar both have large picture windows to make the most of the wonderful views, and open fires for cooler evenings. Mr. Alan Barber (02/11/2017)

"Rather than say everything was excellent, perhaps let's say good but absolutely nothing wrong. The lunchtime picnic boxes not very imaginative but breakfast & dinner.were excellent & the allocation of 'our own' waiter for our stay is quite a nice touch. This applied to Serengeti as well. as do the remarks re picnic boxes. We liked having hot water bottles in our bed at night - it was chilly! "

Ms. Nicola Jones
"Quite a large hotel with many guests so it was very busy - however good food, comfortable rooms a great location inside the rim of the crater and amazing views from the pool / bar area! Liked the hot water bottles in our bed each night as it got quite chilly in the evenings!"

"Food was good at Ngorongoro sopa."
Iain and Helen
"It was good with a beautiful position on the crater rim but it is a big busy hotel. It can be a fair walk to your room but once there the rooms are large and extremely comfortable. The toilet paper was cheap and nasty as were the little tubes of creamer powder for one's tea. Little things letting the overall image down. BUT dining room staff were brilliant and it is the best place to stay to go into Ngorongoro."
Mrs. Sue Holloway
"Can't think of a single adverse comment"
