Matemwe Beach Village

Zanzibar & the Coast

Rating: Simple

Matemwe Beach Village overview

Matemwe Beach Village is a small guesthouse located out on its own on an idyllic, long stretch of white sand beach on the the northeast coast of Zanzibar. Just off-shore is the world-famous Mnemba Atoll, whose circling reef has some of the best diving in East Africa. Along the beach lie palm-thatched villages, where the local people live a traditional life dominated by fishing.

The thatched en-suite cottages are grouped at varying distances from the beach. They all have private verandas with views of the tropical gardens or ocean. There are also some suites, providing more spacious accommodation suitable for small family groups. The Asali Suite is in a secluded position and comes with its own plunge pool, beach and chef, making it ideal for honeymooners and those looking for ultimate luxury.

The lodge is centred around a single large open-sided space looking onto the beach, which serves as the lounge, complete with books and board games, bar and restaurant. There is a swimming pool and sundeck. The menus change daily for every meal and are based on fresh local produce.

One of the main attractions here is the world-class diving at Mnemba atoll. There is enough variety on Mnemba for about 4 to 5 days worth of good diving, maybe 8 to 10 dives. The on-site diving school is able to offer the full range of PADI certificate courses, as well as try-dives and snorkelling trips for the non-divers. Other activities include beach walks, reviving early-morning ocean swims, sailing, fishing and cycling.

Sheila (09/10/2015)

"Good beach-side location, with staff who worked hard to make us comfortable and welcome. Good food, and loved the touch of providing coffee and tea on the beach for anyone who was up early enough to watch dawn - and sunrise over the ocean was well-worth getting up for. We had a neat upstairs area in our room for hanging out, but it turned out to be disappointingly airless and hot. Special mention for the staff who pulled out all the stops for my birthday dinner by the beach!"

Tarne Bevan (25/10/2014)
"This was an extremely friendly and relaxing location. The dive site is on location so sorting out diving trips was very easy. The people there couldn\'t have been more friendly and I loved the little room decorations and the stories on the bed each night. Highly recommended if you want to wander on the beach or sit by the pool with a book."
Mr David Fellingham (20/07/2013)
"Good to see local women harvesting seaweed, and fishermen burning the weed and barnacles off their boats on the beach outside the hotel. Surprised to see the armed guards in the camp. Cleaning staff very unobtrusive. Buffet evening would have benefited from some better lighting. I unwittingly had a large mouthful of chopped garlic that kept the vampires at bay for the next two days! Food in general was of a very high standard, with plenty of choice"

"Matemwe beach was lovely, the food was very good but they people in charge here tried to over charge us for a taxi. We ended up organising a taxi with some other guests ourselves. "

"Matemwe Beach Village has quite a backpacker feel about it. Its very basic but clean and comfortable enough. Ideal if you’re looking for somewhere to relax after a Kili Climb. If staying here I would recommend the Shamba Suites which are split level Masai style huts built together in a kind of village setting as they’re not as basic as the standard rooms. The Asali Suite is totally self sufficient and comes with a private kitchen and chef, a Jacuzzi, open air shower and loo! Perfect for honeymoons or special occasions. There is a white sand beach which can be very seaweedy at times. Also, the tide goes out a long way and its approx a 30min walk to the sea at low tide so not ideal if sea swimming is a high priority. However, this place is great for divers as a fab reef is very close by!"
