Dar es Salaam & surrounds

Why visit Dar es Salaam city and region?

For most people, Dar is really only an ”˜if-you-must’ stopover, however there are couple of spots on the coast south of the town which are definitely worth considering for one or two leisurely nights by the ocean.
The reasons you should visit are:

  • Due to flight timings, Dar is needed as an overnight stop on some itineraries.
  • Some good hotels and restaurants.
  • Under an hour south of the town try the upmarket Ras Kutani for a few nights by the coast.
  • About 3-4 hours’ drive north of Dar, Saadani offer a unique beach-and-bush experience.

When to go to Dar es Salaam region

Any time is fine, but to avoid the main rains you’re best avoiding April and May.

How to do it?

Dar es Salaam is an international airport serviced by many airlines.  There is also a domestic terminal here for connections throughout the country.  There are no airport hotels, so you have to go into town (or further out of town) for a place to stay.  Traffic in town can be very bad at peak times so plenty of journey time is always needed.

Accommodation at Dar es Salaam

In town there is a good choice of hotels from chain hotels like Proteas or Hiltons or cheaper standard hotels such as The Slipway, to smaller boutique hotels such as Oyster Bay.

Outside of town consider Ras Kutani for a luxury coastal stay.
