Mikumi & the Udzungwa Mountains

Why visit the Udzungwa Mountains or Mikumi National Park?

The Udzungwas are a stunning and diverse forested highland area west of Mikumi and Selous reserves in southern Tanzania. They offer good birding and excellent hiking with a chance to see 11 primates in a little-visited area of Africa. Mikumi National Park is a reserve north of Selous which is easily accessible from Dar es Salaam by road.
The reasons you should visit are:

  • The Udzungwas are home to 11 primates including black and white colobus and vervet monkeys.
  • Excellent birding opportunities in the Udzungwas, with over 250 species.
  • The Udzungwas offer superb hiking in a little-visited area, though it’s a long, difficult drive to get here and accommodation is simple.
  • Mikumi is a good option for a short safari within easy road access of Dar es Salaam if you can’t get to Selous.

When to go to the Udzungwas or Mikumi

You can come to this region at any time of year but April and May are the wettest months. We definitely wouldn’t recommend the Udzungwas anywhere near the rainy season from about mid-March to mid-June and again in the latter half of November (short rains). Mikumi is accessible by a tarred road from Dar so you can come any time.

The Udzungwas or Mikumi: How to do it?

Both of these places are accessed from Dar es Salaam. Mikumi is about 4 hours’ drive away, or you can fly from Dar to an airstrip in the park. You need to drive from Mikumi or northern Selous to get to the Udzungwas, and it’s a difficult and long drive so you need to be prepared for that.

Accommodation at the Udzungwas or Mikumi

There is really no choice in the Udzungwas, we’d recommend going for Udzungwa Forest Camp. It’s simple but friendly and comfy. In Mikumi there are few options such as Stanley’s Kopje and Vuma Hills.
