A select and stylish lodge in Kariega Game Reserve with 10 well equipped suites each with a plunge pool and panoramic views, from which you can explore by 4x4, boat and on foot to view the Big 5 and other wildlife of the 10,000 hectare reserve. The lodge was extensively remodelled in 2018, and as well as the spacious suites it provides ample communal areas where you can rest between safaris.
Suites have glass doors and full length windows making them light, and allowing you to enjoying views of the bush as you relax in air conditioned comfort. The deck includes an indulgent plunge pool. There are hot drinks facilities and a minibar so you can help yourself to refreshiments. There are drawers, shelves and hanging space for clothes, and the bathroom has his and hers basins, a large shower cubicle and bathtub.
The main area is set around a small enclosed garden and comprises a lounge, bar and restaurant, the social core of the lodge. Picture windows make the best of the stunning views, and there are open fires and burners adding a cosy feel. There's a terrace where you can relax in the fresh air. The rimflow swimming pool is set a short distance away, linked by a walkway, and is flanked by a sundeck. During your stay you have the use of the wellness centre at Main Lodge a short drive away, offering massages and a gym.
Game drives are offered twice a day and, as well as the Big 5, there are chances to see giraffe, zebra, wildebeest, hippo and several species of antelope. Birds are profuse, with over 280 species on record, Boat rides on the river and bush walks are a good way to supplement 4x4 safaris.
Open: Ukhozi Lodge is open all year. It re-opened after refurbishment in September 2018.
Location: Ukhozi Lodge is in Kariega Game Reserve, about a 5 minute drive Main Lodge. The nearest airport is at Port Elizabeth, about 90 minutes away.
Rooms: There are 10 air-conditioned suites. Each has a king size bed, sofa, coffee table, tea and coffee maker, minibar, telephone, safe, hairdryer and en-suite bathroom with a shower cubicle, bath and twin hand basins. Outside there is a deck with a plunge pool.
Activities: Morning and afternoon game drives, nature walks, morning boat trips on the Kariega River, canoeing and fishing. It should be noted that walking guides are often not armed unless looking for white rhino and we do not recommend accompanying unarmed guides on walks in Kariega among big game. It is possible to visit beaches at Kenton-on-Sea, historical towns such as Grahamstown, Salem and Port Alfred, and play golf at nearby courses.
Facilities: There is a large lounge with sofas, an open fire and floor-to-ceiling windows, a dining area with a solid fuel burner, bar, reading/TV room and a wine cellar. These are set round a courtyard garden. There is a spa, and a little way off there’s a semi-circular infinity pool with a sundeck and loungers. Guests at Ukhozi have access to the wellness centre and gym at Main Lodge.
Dining: Meals usually eaten as a group.
Children: Children aged 11 years and over are welcome.
Health: This is not a malarial area.
Communication: There is internet access in communal areas.
