Kariega River Lodge

Eastern Cape

Rating: Deluxe

Kariega River Lodge overview

River lodge is set on the banks of the Bushman's River in the heart of the Kariega Game Reserve. The reserve is bordered in the east and west by the picturesque Kariega and Bushman's Rivers, and boasts spectacular and dramatic views and vistas with an abundance of African game and wildlife in its natural habitat. The Kariega Game Reserve is a 9,000 hectare private, family owned and managed, malaria- free reserve and a great game-viewing location.

Daily game drives in open vehicles with qualified game rangers offer the chance to see the Big 5 plus a range of other wildlife and a wide variety of fauna, flora and birdlife in a landscape that incorporates two majestic river valleys and five different eco-systems.

River Lodge is made up of 10 spacious thatched suites with high ceilings and large picture windows. The suites are located along the banks of the Bushman's River giving guests a true feeling of peace and tranquility in the African bush. Each room has en-suite bathroom facilities with an indoor shower and an ornate bath, air-conditioning and a private patio.

On a typical day, guests will have an early morning game drive, then enjoy a large breakfast back at the lodge after which they can choose from a variety of activities or simply find a quiet spot in one of the lounges, page through a book in the library, relax by the pool on the large viewing deck overlooking the river. Lunch and a siesta follow. In the late afternoon there is another game drive culminating in sundowners out on the reserve. On returning to the lodge, guests have time to wash and change for dinner, which will be served either in the restaurant or in the boma area around the camp fire.

River Lodge also hosts a variety of activities. As well as the morning and afternoon game drives, there are safari walks, boat cruises to Kenton-on-Sea beaches, canoeing, river fishing and crabbing to choose from. Guests at River Lodge can also enjoy massages and treatments at the Wellness Centre located at the Main Lodge.

Open: Kariega River Lodge is open all year.

Location: The lodge is in the Kariega Game Reserve in the Eastern Cape. It's approximately 1.5 hours from Port Elizabeth.

Rooms:  There are just 10 thatched suites.  They have large picture windows, expansive private decks where you can sit and often see game from your own room. All are airconditioned with an overhead fan. There's a tea and coffee station and a well-stocked mini bar in each suite. The bathroom has a stand alone-bath, twin basins and shower.

Activities: Game drives are popular here as guests go in search of the Big 5. Morning and afternoon game drives are offered. In addition to this you can enjoy guided bush walks, fishing, canoeing and river cruises. Guests at River Lodge can also take the daily boat cruise down the Bushmans River to the village of Kenton-on-Sea and its pretty beaches. It should be noted that walking guides are often unarmed and we do not recommend accompanying an unarmed guide in this area where there are large numbers of potentially dangerous game.

Facilities: The main areas of the lodge are also under a high, thatch roof. Here you will find the welcoming communal lounge, dining room, bar area and a library. Next to this is the curio shop and swimming pool.

Dining: Meals are taken at individual tables both in the dining room and al-fresco.

Children: Children aged 11 and older are welcome at Kariega River Lodge.

Health: This is not a malarial area.

Communication: There is Wi-Fi in the main areas, but not in the suites.

Hannah Black, Tribes

"A lovely camp located on the banks of the Bushmans River in a stunning location. This is a well presented camp with a varied array of activities to suit everyone. There is no communal eating but you do eat with your ranger which is nice! Kariega River Lodge is fab! Great guiding, lovely staff, tasty food. We really enjoyed our stay here."

Mrs Susan Bryant
"Very friendly helpful staff. Disappointed there was only one room facing the river. However the main area had lots of seating with wonderful views. We were disappointed at the lack of wildlife on the river however. It is estuarine so no mammals in the water nor coming to drink. Suprisingly few birds also. Was lovely it was small..only 20 guests unlike the Main lodge which caters for over a hundred guests. We had very good experiences of wildlife sightings on the drives, altho very few small mammals in the area. It is very hilly so lots of bumpy rides. Food was ok. "
Mr. Timothy Somervell
"Lovely location by the river, very relaxing to sit with a drink and watch the wildlife including the cheeky monkeys trying to steal food. Fully inclusive of all food and drinks unless you had special requests for drink that they needed to buy in specially - which was not needed as they had a good selection. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Aim to arrive by 2pm as there will be an afternoon game drive on your arrival day."
