Hog Hollow Country Lodge

Garden Route

Rating: Mid-range

Hog Hollow Country Lodge overview

Hog Hollow is a lovely lodge on the edge of an indigenous forest in a private nature reserve with panoramic views of the surrounding forests, valleys and mountains, in one of the most beautiful parts of South Africa - the Garden Route.

Each of the 16 suites has a private deck overlooking the wonderful views. King size beds, fireplaces, hammocks, ensuite bathrooms and hand-crafted artifacts are just a few of the thoughtful touches that welcome you. There is also a private villa with 3 bedrooms, spacious accommodation and an infinity pool.

The main house is the social hub of Hog Hollow. There are three lounge areas and a communal dining area next to the swimming pool and sundeck. Each evening a fire is lit in the boma and guests gather for sundowners. Guests can enjoy outstanding cuisine. Breakfast is a buffet style meal including cooked dishes and champagne. Dinner is a socialble affair often featuring fresh fish and seafood.

Hog Hollow particularly welcomes children, organising babysitting, special turn downs with a glass of fresh milk and a Gingerbread Man, children's stories and CDs, buckets and spades for beach days and special menus and meal times.

Open: Hog Hollow Country Lodge is open all year.

Location: Hog Hollow Country Lodge is in the Crags, about 20kms from Plettenberg Bay. It is about a 6 hour drive from Cape Town and 75 minutes from George Airport.

Rooms: There are 16 suites, all located in the gardens. They are attractively furnished and decorated. You will have a sitting area and a spacious bathroom. There is no TV as you can do no better than sit on your veranda and admire the view of the gardens. You have a hi-fi system and a selection of music, Wi-Fi internet access and a minibar. You’ll also find home-made goodies like lemon syrup and cookies waiting for you in your room. Hot water bottles are provided on cool nights. There is also a private villa at Hog Hollow. It's about 400 metres from the main lodge and has 3 bedrooms all en-suite, a large lounge with a TV, music system, DVD player and fireplace and a games room with a pool table. There is a kitchen dining area with an 8 seater table. Outside there is a wooden deck and an infinity pool.

Activities: This is great walking country with many routes to choose from. Wildlife lovers can walk from the lodge to the Monkeyland Primate Sanctuary, the Birds of Eden or the Elephant Sanctuary. Thrill seekers will want to visit the highest bungy in the world and the Treetops Canopy tours. You can take boat trips looking for whales and dolphins. Horse riding is available. There are several shopping outlets nearby, too, selling arts and crafts.

Facilities: The lodge has spacious communal areas with 3 lounges to choose from, a large dining room and a boma where guests gather in the evening. There is an outdoor swimming pool and a sundeck with sun loungers. In the evening you can enjoy sundowners and snacks in the boma. The gift shop is ideal for souvenirs.

Dining: Breakfast tends to be a communal buffet-style meal eaten at the large dining table. At dinner you can chose between communal or private dining. Please note dinner is not included in the rates and must be booked and paid for locally.

Children: Children of all ages are welcome. There are 3 2-storey suites that can accommodate families. Baby sitting can be arranged and there is a special children’s menu. Children should be kept under supervision at all times.

Health: This is a non-malarial area.

Communication: There is wi-fi internet access in guest rooms, though this can be sporadic, and in the main house.

Hannah Black, Tribes

"Situated in a peaceful location in the middle of nowhere, Hog Holloow is not for people who want to be the thick of things. Nicely presented rooms (apart from the honeymoon suite which I felt was smaller than the other rooms and quite dark). The villa is something special, very contemporary and it felt as though you're living in someone's house rather than a hotel. Hog Hollow is ideally located between Storms River adventure area and Plettenberg Bay so there are plenty of activities nearby."
