10 days from £6395pp plus international flights.
This is a great 10-day tour of authentic Rwanda. We have included wildlife highlights such as treks to see gorillas, colobus monkeys and golden monkeys, and a stay in the little-visited Akagera National Park, but we have not overlooked the cultural side of this fascinating country.
Since its troubles in the 1990's, Rwanda has become a vibrant and positive country whose people are friendly, and whose landscapes and natural heritage is awe-inspiring.
This is a tailor made tour where you have your own driver/guide and private vehicle, and you can take the trip at whatever date you like. You can change any part of this suggested itinerary to make a trip that is just what you want if it's not quite perfect for you. You might also like to know that the price will come down significantly if there are more people in your party.
There is quite a bit of trekking in forests on this trip, so it's quite active. It's not beyond a person of average fitness though you need to be steady on your feet. It is in the forests of Nyungwe and Volcanoes NP that you will see the various primates for which Rwanda is famed, including mountain gorillas, golden monkeys, colobus, mangabeys and baboons. And the bird life is superb!
At Lake Kivu you'll be able to enjoy the stunning scenery of this massive lake with the backdrop of the Virunga volcanoes, including Nyiragongo in DRC which is still active (it's not close enough to be a worry though!). Akagera offers Rwanda's only savannah wildlife experience and is in fact now a Big 5 destination too.
This really is a varied and exciting tour of Rwanda which we've no doubt will captivate you.
This morning we head south west to the old seat of power of the Rwanda kingdom, Nyanza. You can see the restored traditional Royal Palace. A stop at Butare allows us to show you the National Museum which offers a great insight into Rwandan cultural heritage. We stop at a local restaurant for lunch before continuing to Nyungwe House in time for dinner. Full board.
We arrive at Nyungwe Forest park HQ for a half day trek in search of the Angola colobus monkeys which can be found in troops of several hundred! Nyungwe has been classed as 'Africa's Galapagos Islands' due to the diversity of primates (including chimps), birds and plantlife here. The trek can last up to 6 hours and is a fair to moderate trek. In the afternoon we tour a local tea plantation. Full board.
After breakfast we drive north to Kibuye on the shores of Lake Kivu, with stops at local markets on the way. We have lunch at a lodge, then continue to Gisenyi on the northern end of the lake. The hotel is on a sandy beach and has a swimming pool and water sports centre. This is a beautiful spot and a nice place to relax. Breakfast, Lunch.
You have the morning to enjoy the facilities at Lake Kivu Serena or just sit and enjoy the gorgeous scenery.
After lunch we head further north to Ruhengeri at the foot of the Virungas. This chain of mostly dormant volcanoes covered in montane forest is home to the endangered mountain gorillas and golden monkeys as well as other mammal species (such as buffalo, duiker, bushbuck). Breakfast, dinner.
Today is another early start as you're off back up the mountains, this time to find the rare golden monkeys. The trek can take between 2-4 hours and you have one captivating hour to stay with the group. They might stay in one spot if they are at rest, but often they are very active and we will follow them through the forest.
In the afternoon we drive you back to Kigali to stay at the Serena Hotel. Breakfast.
After breakfast we will drive you on a roughly 2 hour scenic journey to Akagera National Park. After checking in at Ruzizi Tented Camp, this afternoon you can enjoy a game drive in this little-visited park on the eastern border of Rwanda. It is a huge wetland and savannah region, with a rich biodiversity of mammals and bird species, and since rhinos and lions were reintroduced here in the 2015 and 2017, it is Rwanda's only 'big 5' park. It is an important addition to the wildlife conservation efforts of this small country. Full board.
You have an early start today, as you set off on a game drive with your driver/guide. You will take a packed lunch with you and make the most of your day in this special park dominated by a labyrinth of swamps and lakes around the Kagera River. Within the acacia-dotted savannah lands you shoudl see elephants, buffalo, perhaps hyenas, giraffes and zebras, impalas and eland. Amongst the plains game, lions will be watching. In the afternoon we'll take you on a boat ride before heading back to the lodge. Full board.
This morning we will drive you back to Kigali. We'll transfer you to the airport to catch your flight home. Your Rwanda odyssey is sadly at an end.
