Aqua Expeditions Cruise

5 days from £2390pp plus international flights.

Head out on a luxurious riverboat to explore the rivers, forests, birds and wildlife of the Amazon River. This 4-night Aqua Expeditions cruise on MV Aqua departs every Tuesday, though you could also consider their 7-night or 3-night version depending on what time you have available.

The exact itinerary depends on whether you're travelling in the high water (Dec-May) or low water (June-Nov) season, though the overall experience is very similar, and you do have to be a bit flexible anyway as the itineraries will change somewhat depending on weather and other conditions. Here we have roughly described a high water itinerary.

You will explore three main tributaries of the Amazon - the Maranon, Ucayali and Puinahua rivers. You will go on boat trips through flooded forest, take jungle walks to spot the wildlife, visit riverside villages to see a bit of life in this region, meet local fishermen, go fishing for colourful tropical fish (or maybe pirhanas!), take night trips on boats to spot nocturnal forest life ... all this plus great food and accommodation too.

This cruise is easily added on to other things you've planned in Peru, as this is only a roughly 2 hour flight from Lima.

The minimum age for this trip is 7 yrs.
MV Aqua

Depart from Lima at around 3.30pm for the 1 hour 45 min flight to Iquitos. A bus will transfer you to Nauta wharf, which will take about 1½ hours through scenic countryside. A safety drill and general briefing will be give just before dinner at 8.30pm. The meals tend to be Peruvian with a European twist. Perhaps enjoy a drink on the upper deck and watch the night skies before bedtime. Dinner.
Monkey in the rainforest

Vast areas of the Amazon is flooded for much of the year. We head out to see this at Yanallpa River. Parrots, macaws, and monkeys often come close to our skiff.
Returning to the boat for lunch, we set out again about 4pm to explore the Dorado River. This is a magical journey through the 'mirrored forest' with its jet black waters reflecting the surrounding trees, and where a myriad of birds, plus monkeys and sloths can be seen. As we make our way back, light is fading so we have a chance to spot caimans, frogs and fishing bats!
Travelling by skiff in the Amazon

Early morning at Hatum Posa oxbow lake. We may see several monkey species, many bird species such as egrets, hawks and terns.
Later, set off on a walk with your guide to find out about local traditional life, and the fruit trees and medicinal plants of the rainforest.
In late afternoon we search for fluffy monk saki, capuchin and howler monkeys. At nightfall we use spotlights to show you some of the creatures making this nocturnal din! Huge caimans are sure to be out too.
Toucan in the Amazon

How about breakfast with dolphins this morning? Well we'll certainly aim for that as we have our early morning excursion, taking breakfast with us.
Returning to MV Aqua we begin to sail back towards Iquitos. On the way we stop for an afternoon excursion at Carocurahuayte Lake. Here you could enjoy watching, or fishing for, some of the more than 3,000 species of tropical fish that live in the Amazon basin. Maybe catch yourself a pirhana?
The boat will cruise through the night tonight.
View from MV Aqua

After breakfast, water levels permitting we will travel by skiff to Belen to see a small riverside community where there is a a bustling market for Amazonian goods of all kinds.
After a light lunch back on board, we head to a manatee rescue centre, and finally to San Juan Amazonian Indian market.
You will be back at Iquitos Airport in time for the afternoon flight back to Lima.
