Apurimac Raft the Source of the Amazon

5 days from £560pp plus international flights.

Experience the ultimate adrenalin rush as you plunge through fast-flowing rapids down a steep-sided gorge near the source of the mighty Amazon River! The Apurimac Canyon, some 3,000 metres deep, is made for adventure. Camping on the riverbank and dining beneath the stars adds an extra dimension to this action-packed holiday.

You'll be in a remote part of Peru, a region very few visitors are privileged to see. You'll observe dramatic scenery, not just during the rafting trip but also on your way from and to Cusco, passing through soaring mountain ranges. There's wildlife, too, so when you're not negotiating rapids you can keep an eye out for Andean foxes, otters and pumas.

Camp will be set up each evening in a specially selected location, as you rest after your exertions and look back on the thrills of the day. The small of freshly-cooked food will soon be wafting through the air and you'll be served a wonderfully tasty dinner, well-earned. After all the excitement and exertion, sleep will come easily and you'll wake refreshed, ready for the adventures to come.

Your safety is, of course, paramount, and our partners are highly experienced in arranging rafting trips. They use the highest quality equipment and have the best guides, so although this is adventure you'll be in the safest hands. Best of all, it's FUN!

You'll be met at Cusco airport by a local representative and driven to your city hotel. Having checked in and settled into the hotel, you guide will take you on a walking tour of the town, taking in sites you'd like to see and as short or long as you'd like. The hotel is a short walk from the main square and there are several cafes and restaurants within easy reach. The hotel has internet access so you can contact family and friends back home, and there are cosy sofas where you can relax after dinner.

Following breakfast you'll be collected from the hotel for the drive to Apurimac Canyon, which will take about 5 hours. The scenery is spectacular and, if the weather's clear, you should catch a glimpse of the snow-dusted Vilcanota mountains before you descend into the canyon. You'll reach the rafting start point, where the inflatable rafts are prepared and loaded up with provisions. You'll be given a safety briefing and information about white water rafting, then you'll be ready to set off! You'll head into the canyon for the start of your adventure. Tonight you'll be camping. Full board.

It's a full-on day! You'll be tackling the Rio Apurimac rapids. The river's name means 'The great speaker' in Quechua, by dint of the fact that Inca priests would often 'consult' the river en-route to Cusco. The rapids here are virtually non-stop, and giant boulders in the river may force a change of route from time to time. You will also have to get out at times, to get round un-runnable falls. You're in the safest of hands, however, and will be well looked after every moment of the day. In quieter moments you'll be able admire the scenery and scout the riverbanks for otters, Andean foxes and pumas. Full board.

Your rafting odyssey continues this morning, with more thrills (and hopefully no spills!), till you reach a break in the tall canyon walls. A bus will be waiting here to take you back through the mountains to Cusco and your hotel, arriving in the late afternoon. It's time to enjoy a hot shower and a celebratory drink. It's been quite an adventure and you'll have many tales to tell those back home. Breakfast, lunch.

This morning you'll have breakfast at the hotel, enjoying views of the Cusco rooftops and main square through the picture windows. Later you'll be collected and taken to the airport for your onward flight. Breakfast.
