With two coastlines and endless beautiful beaches, the beach usually features at some point in every Costa Rica itinerary. Blessed with beaches on both the Caribbean and the Pacific coasts, there is plenty of variety and there aren't many places on this earth where the rainforest grows right down to meet the beach.
The Pacific is perhaps the more popular given its proximity to Arenal, Guanacaste and Manuel Antonio. A few of our favourites on this coast are Playa Grande for turtles, Jacó for surfing and nightlife and Uvita for a more secluded experience and snorkelling. With so many beaches on offer, and each different from the next there is definitely something for everyone in Costa Rica.
If you are looking to immerse yourself in total relaxation then the Caribbean might be for you. The vibe here is even more laid back than the rest of Costa Rica (and that’s saying something) Beaches stretch from Tortuguero in the north (where seasonally the turtles come to nest) down to Puerto Viejo de Talamanca to the south. There is a fabulous mix of cultures here in the south, indigenous, Costa Rican (Tico) and Afro-Caribbean – it makes for a wonderful melting pot of personality, colour and delicious fusion cuisine.
One thing to always remember is take care when swimming, some beaches have strong rip-tides, so always check with the locals before venturing in.
where to go
The first question is Pacific or Caribbean coast. Then decide what you would like to do on the beach, swim, snorkel, dive, surf. Each beach is different and lend themselves to different activites. There are some real gems if you are looking for peace and quiet.
when to go
Interestingly, a good time to visit the Caribbean coast is usually the opposite for the Pacific. September and October will see the Pacific coast at its wettest, but this is dry time for the Caribbean.
