Opuwo is the gateway town to Kaokoland, located on the edge of town, perched on a hill overlooking the surrounding valleys and mountains you will find Opuwo Country Lodge. The impressive thatched main building houses a dining room where you can enjoy good wholesome fare, a well stocked bar, a lounge with comfy couches, curio shop and even a wine cellar. In front of the main building there is a swimming pool, perfect for hot afternoons with views to die for, and an outdoor deck area where you can witness spectacular Namibian sunsets. Meals at Opuwo Country Lodge are a wholesome affair and can be taken at individual tables, with friendly Namibian service.
The decor throughout the lodge is of rustic browns and terracotta with wooden, leather and wicker furntiure, giving an African feel. The rooms are simple and uncluttered and have en-suite facilites and air conditioning, which is welcome in the summer months. The comfortable beds all have mozzie nets and luggage racks at the foot of each bed, there is a small side table and chairs where you can relax. There are 40 rooms in total over two different levels, although the facilities are the same, the 'luxury' rooms are a little larger.
One of the main reasons to visit this area is to meet the Himba. The lodge can arrange for a guided tour to a Himba village, the guide will act as an interpreter and you will be able to interact with the villagers and learn about their life, beliefs and customs - a thought provoking excursion. It is also possible to visit Epupa Falls from the lodge, this can be done as a self-drive activity if you have your own vehicle, or you can opt for a guided trip organised by the lodge. Opuwo also has it's own spa and can arrange for luxurious pampering treatments at the end of a hard day's drive.
