Vilanculos Beach Lodge

Southern Mozambique

Rating: Mid-range

Vilanculos Beach Lodge overview

Vilanculos Beach Lodge is situated in the small costal town of Vilanculos, in the subtropical province of Inhambane, Mozambique. This is a great place from which to explore the picturesque Bazaruto Archipelago and Bazaruto National Park. While here you can enjoy watersports, lazy days on the beach, take boat trips, go diving, and take horse rides along the strand.

The lodge is made from natural indigenous materials and extends right on to the beach with the buildings set back about 100m up the ridge, overlooking the sea. The main building houses the lounge, reception, main bar, restaurant and kitchen. Relaxing areas lead through to the gardens and onto the beach. In the event of inclement weather, awnings are available to offer you protection, without blocking the magnificent views. The large comfortable couches in the lounge provide the perfect place to relax, sipping a drink from the bar and enjoying the views. The restaurant serves both Mozambican and Western fare and there's a pizza oven, too, so you won't go hungry here.

There is a lovely large infinity pool facing the ocean, and a beautiful beach. There is bar at the pool overlooking the gardens and beach. The beach entry accommodates wheel chair access, and is perfect for children, elderly or disabled patrons.

The luxury chalets all face the beach with plants providing privacy around the garden. They are high roofed thatch structures with large glass doors and windows making them very light. All are air conditioned and have mosquito nets, safes, minibar and coffee and tea stations. The presidential suite is set on stilts at the water's edge and has two en-suite bedrooms and makes ideal family accommodation.

Open: Vilanculos Beach Lodge is open all year.

Location: Vilanculos Beach Lodge is on the edge of Vilanculos (also known as Vilanculo) town in the south of Mozambique. Vilanculos airport is about a 10 minute drive (8kms) from the lodge. It is 500kms south of Beira and 720kms north of Maputo. Vilanculos is often referred to as the gateway to the Bazaruto Archipelago, the only underwater national park in Mozambique, whose islands lie just off shore.

Rooms: Accommodation is in 22 luxury double bungalows and 1 presidential suite, spread through the gardens. They are built from natural materials and have thatched ceilings, plaster walls and wooden door frames. Each has an en-suite bathroom with a shower, hand basin and toilet. Rooms are decorated in subtle shades and have large glass doors and windows admitting the light. You have air conditioning, mosquito nets, safe, tea and coffee making facilities and a minibar. At the front there is a private terrace for relaxing in seclusion. The presidential suite consists of two en-suite bedrooms, a large lounge and covered terrace, all built on stlits and makes ideal family accommodation.

Activities: The lodge has links with a local dive centre and arranges dives in a number of sites in the Bazaruto Archipelago National Park. Snorkelling trips can also be arranged to the two mile reef. You can hire a motor boat and crew for the day, to go island hopping. Whale watching trips are offered between July and October. The lodge will supply you with a packed lunch to be enjoyed in the location of your choice. Dhow cruises are also available. Deep sea and fly fishing are popular. You can walk into the centre of Vilanculos and watch fishermen bringing their catch ashore. A visit to the bustling market is great fun. Horse rides along deserted beaches can be arranged.

Facilities: The main building houses the reception area, lounge, restaurant and main bar. It is thatched and open plan and has a friendly atmosphere. The restaurant serves an extensive menu of traditional Mozambican cuisine which you can enjoy indoors and outside, as you prefer. There are pretty gardens with a range of plants, flowers and trees. Pathways crisscross the gardens and lead to secluded spots where you lie back in a lounger or swing chair. The infinity pool is set by the beach so you can enjoy ocean views as you swim, and is served by a pool bar.
