Marrakech, Mountains & Beach

9 days from £1475pp plus international flights.

Experience multi-faceted Morocco from the sights and sounds of Marrakech, the peace and beauty of the Atlas Mountains to the laid-back charms of coastal Essaouira.

Your first experience of Morocco on this holiday will be exploring the fascinating city of Marrakech with your expert guide. It might only be a 4 hour flight away from the UK, but it is a world away in terms of its culture, ambience, architecture, food ... well, everything really. This is what makes it so exotic and enticing! You're staying in a gorgeous riad with several courtyards, a pool, large rooftop terrace and superb spa.

In the nearby Atlas Mountains the rugged scenery is stunning, and the wide open spaces and tranquility are a contrast to busy Marrakech. You're staying in a traditional and very charming old kasbah, with a lovely terrace and its own hammam (steam bath) in the garden. Your local guide will take you on hikes from here, and you can ask for these to be as easy or challenging as you wish.

From here it's pure relaxation, as you journey to the coastal resort of Essaouira. It's an attractive walled town with a busy working harbour and lots of craft studios, as well as wide, windswept beaches. In the cooler months, brisk walks along the beach or the ramparts will blow away the cobwebs, while in summer it's hot, and the wind from the Atlantic is welcome and refreshing. Your hotel adds a touch of luxury to your stay, with its rooftop pool and terrace and beautiful courtyard.

Busy city scenes, breathtaking mountain views and miles of sandy beaches - you'll be left with many images and memories to cherish from this holiday.

The pool at La Sultana

You're met on arrival at Marrakech airport and transferred to your luxury boutique hotel, La Sultana. This traditional riad is built around 4 courtyards and is a member of the 'Great Hotels of the World' a tribute to the quality of its accommodation, facilities and service. The rest of the day is free for you to relax. There's a courtyard swimming pool and a large rooftop terrace for relaxation, plus a lovely spa offering a wide choice of treatments. Later, as evening nears, you can walk to the main square, the Djemmaa el Fna, which comes alive with entertainers and food stalls after sunset.
Walk through the souks in Marrakech

Today you can get to know this exciting city. Your guide leads you on a tour of the main sites, and can also show you places you might otherwise miss, tailoring the tour to your interests. The souks are fascinating, with their mix of stalls and products, and offer a chance to hone your bargaining skills, while the Djemmaa el Fna is always great for people watching. There are mosques, palaces, gardens and museums all waiting to be explored. Between visits take time out at one of the many cafes enjoying a refreshing mint tea or chilled orange juice. At the end of the day you return to the peace and calm of La Sultana. Breakfast
Majorelle Gardens

You have a free day to soak up the sights and sounds of Marrakech. Options include taking a horse-drawn carriage to the Majorelle Gardens, exploring the maze of streets in the medina, and learning about the city's history and culture in a museum. La Sultana is near the Saadian tombs, with fine displays of carving and rich mosaic work. Back at the hotel you can sunbathe on the roof terrace as you listen to the sounds of city life down below. Breakfast
Kasbah du Toubkal, Atlas Mountains

Leaving the city behind you'll be driven into the Atlas Mountains to your hotel for the night, Kasbah du Toubkal. This is about a 90 minute journey. This fine kasbah was originally the summer home of the local feudal chieftain, but fell into decline. It was rescued, rebuilt and restored in the 1990s, and offers genuine Berber hospitality. Enjoy lunch on the terrace to the backdrop of stunning mountain views, and take things easy this afternoon. Breakfast, lunch, dinner

You have a picnic lunch with you so can select a special spot in which to enjoy it. Tonight you stay at a Berber guest house, experiencing hospitality and savouring traditional home-cooked food. (Note: should you prefer to have another night at the kasbah, this can be arranged and you could have lunch at a berber gite instead). Breakfast, lunch, dinner
The rooftop terrace at Heure Bleue

Enjoy a hike with your guide in the region around the guest house this morning, returning for lunch. Later you depart by car for Essaouira. It has workshops where you can watch skilled wood carvers at work, ramparts lined by cannons, and a busy fishing harbour. You can take a bracing walk along the long, windswept beach, stopping to admire the skill of the surfers. Your guide is on hand to show you the may aspects of this charming town. Breakfast
