Marrakech and The Atlas Mountains

8 days from £1225pp plus international flights.

If you want to experience both the peace and magnificence of the Atlas Mountains and the hustle and bustle of Marrakech, this is the trip for you.

This holiday gives you the best of both worlds - the stunning landscapes of the Atlas Mountains and the fascinating and vibrant city of Marrakech. And you explore it all on foot - getting close to nature, and meeting the local people.

On arrival at Marrakech you meet your trekking guide who will be with you for the duration of your time in the Atlas Mountains. Over the next 5 days you'll explore the area at your own pace, the precise routes selected by you and your guide to match your wishes. You stay at 2 different lodges, each providing comfy en-suite accommodation, excellent food and a traditional hammam.

Back in Marrakech you have 2 nights in a luxury hotel within the walled city. You'll see your pick of the sites in the company of an expert local guide, and have a whole day to explore independently. This allows plenty of time for shopping, enjoying local food and relaxing by the pool or on the rooftop terrace at your lovely hotel.

As always, with our tailor made holidays, this itinerary can be tweaked as you want so if you'd like more walking in the Atlas Mountains and less time in Marrakech, or vice versa, just let us know.

Relax on the terrace at Kasbah du Toubkal

You will meet your guide on arrival at the kasbah andcan discuss the nature of the walks and treks you want as these can be tailored to your wishes. Depending on your flight arrival time, you may be able to go for a first walk in the area this afternoon. Later, enjoy a drink on the terrace as you take in the mountain views before dinner is served, a chance to sample some great local cuisine. Dinner
Explore the area near Imili in the Atlas Mountains

You can opt for as much or little activity as you wish. You are welcome to take it easy at the kasbah, enjoying the clear mountain air and views, later walking down to stroll around the village. If you want to head out further, your guide is happy to accompany you on a walk to a nearby valley. If you're away from Kasbah du Toubkal at lunchtime you'll be supplied with a packed lunch. Or do a full day trek with lunch en route. Back at the kasbah you can unwind on the terrace or in the courtyard garden. Breakfast, lunch, dinner
Trekking in the Azzaden Valley

Your trek begins in earnest today as you set out from Imlil with your guide. You only need to carry what you want on the trek as the mule will bring any luggage you need. Your route takes you along footpaths and mule tracks, past cultivated terraces, orchards and walnut groves, to the remote Azzaden Valley. There are spectacular views to enjoy along the way, and your guide will select a suitably scenic spot for your picnic lunch. Journey's end today is Toubkal Trekking Lodge in Ait Aissa village. With just 4 rooms this is an intimate lodge with a lovely terrace overlooking the valley. The highest point you reach today is 2,200 metres and the overall altitude gain is 400 metres. Breakfast, lunch, dinner
Enjoy tea at the Azzaden Trekking Lodge

There's a choice of treks today of different durations, all exploring the scenic Azzaden Valley. Your guide can help you select your route, which may be a moderate walk or a more taxing trek as you choose, and will accompany you. His local knowledge adds greatly to your enjoyment of the day, as you learn about life in the Atlas Mountains and observe rural Berber settlements. Depending on the length of your trek you'll have lunch either at the lodge or en-route as a picnic. Having enjoyed a day out exploring you can visit the lodge's hammam for a traditional, cleansing steam bath before sitting down to dinner. Breakfast, lunch, dinner
Mules carry most of the luggage during the trek

You leave Toubkal Trekking Lodge after breakfast, following your chosen route back to Imlil and Kasbah du Toubkal. You'll have lunch prepared for you on the way, and should be back at Kasbah du Toubkal with time to wash and don a change of clothes for dinner. Breakfast, lunch, dinner

There's so much to see and do, and your guide is happy to tailor the tour to your interests. Spend time in the busy medina, people watch from a pavement cafe, visit some of the lovely palaces and gardens. Be sure to observe life in the Djemmaa el Fna, at the heart of the old city. By the end of the day you'll be ready for some rest and relaxation, so can head back to your hotel, maybe cooling off with a swim in the pool. Breakfast

Today has been left free so you can choose how to occupy your time. You might want to shop for souvenirs and exercise your bargaining skills in the souks, or take a horse and carriage ride out to the beautiful Majorelle Gardens. There are museums where you can learn more about the history and culture of the city, and plenty of cafes and restaurants serving tempting Moroccan meals. This evening you can head into the Djemmaa el Fna, to watch the transformation as dusk falls and the acrobats, entertainers and snake charmers take to the stage. You might want to dine at one of the many food stalls, alongside the locals. Breakfast
