Explore Likoma Island on foot or by bike. The people here are extremely friendly and there is a lot to see including the amazing cathedral. Excellent diving and snorkelling can be enjoyed here, as well as kayaking, windsurfing and sailing.
Kaya Mawa is located on the south west tip of Likoma Island, which is still in Malawi but close to the shores of Mozambique, who 'own' the waters around the island. Likoma is covered with mango trees and ancient baobab trees, surrounded by sandy beaches and rocky coves. The lodge was built entirely by hand, in partnership with the local community. The accommodation is in stone and teak framed cottages set into a granite headland using natural resources as much as possible. Sandy beaches stretch in both directions from the lodge, surrounded by ancient baobab trees.
The food at Kaya Mawa is excellent and there is a fully stocked bar and a range of cold drinks. The restaurant is used for buffet breakfasts and lunches and there are many unique areas where dinner is served - on a beach, a deck, platform or on the gazebo. The cuisine is a superb mix of simple and delicious international cuisine. The bar and restaurant are arranged across several levels of decks with plenty of comfy seating. The bar has views to the south of Lake Malawi and offers superb sunsets. For those needing to work while away (if you must!) there is a quiet office with wi-fi internet connection, and office equipment.
Kaya Mawa has several premium rooms and private houses some with their own plunge pools and all rooms have improved decor and huge bathrooms. All have private terraces, most with direct access to the lake and all with large hand made beds.
There are 3 standard rooms and 4 premium rooms, 2 houses and 2 family chalets, so Kaya Mawa can accommodate single travellers, couples, families and groups of friends.
In addition there is Ndomo House, ideal for those wanting complete privacy, a great family home or a magical escape for 2. Perfect for a wind down after a safari or a destination in itself, it is built around boulders, with rough rock walls and smooth plastered walls making for characterful accommodation. It is a self-contained property with 4 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms (3 en-suite), and ample living space indoor and out including a swimming pool, and comes with its own compliment of staff, a boat and private vehicle. Staying here you'll have the benefit of all the facilities and activities that Kaya Mawa has to offer, and are welcome to spend as much time as you like at the lodge, including meals if you wish.

Kaya Mawa works with the Green Safaris Conservation Foundation to support ongoing community and conservation projects, such as creating a trade workshop to employ local orphan carers and single mothers. They also support HIV/AIDS awareness programmes, the building and resourcing of a community library, and construction of a water tank and piping system that supplies some 2,000 people with running drinking water.
Guests at Kaya Mawa may have the chance to become involved in some of these projects and see them in action, and to visit and help at a local school.
"We wanted somewhere simple but high end, quiet but friendly and definitely needed to 'get away from it all'. Kaya Mawa was perfect for this. The accommodation was simple but exquisitely furnished - much of the furniture was sourced locally. It was all set into the surroundings beautifully. The staff and management couldn't have been nicer or more friendly. The food was simple but could have won awards!"
