This exclusive lodge is accessible by boat or on foot and has accommodation for just 12 guests. It is tucked away on a crescent-shaped beach flanked by lush rainforest, a setting that is a feast for the eyes: azure blue ocean, golden sand, deep green foliage and blue skies. At Masoala Forest Lodge you can enjoy nature's bounty, taking in as much or little activity as you wish each day.
The accommodation is in en-suite tree-houses set on a high wooden platform, from which you can look out over the forest and sea. They offer complete seclusion and simple comforts. Built from natural materials including palm, bamboo and sustainably-sourced local timber, their design is based on the dwellings of the local Betsimaraka tribe, and cleverly incorporates an inner canvas tent for extra security. The all-round air flow keeps the interior beautiifully cool.
The beach house is the social heart of the lodge, comprising the lounge, bar and dining areas. It is set on a stilted platform and is open to the front for lovely views of the beach and Antongil Bay. Nearer the shore, the sea deck is built over over a group of rocks and from here you can watch fish in the water below. This deck is used for breakfast, afternoon tea and sundowner drinks each day, and has hammocks where you can while away the time.
The warm waters of the Tampolo Marine Reserve lend themselves perfectly to snorkelling right of the beach. Hop on a sea kayak and explore the islands, reefs, rivers and investigate some of the beautiful and deserted beaches that are dotted along this sheltered coastline. Explore on foot, kayak or by boat - the choice is yours.
