La Varangue Betsileo

High Plateau

La Varangue Betsileo overview

This hotel is set among lush verdant groves where you'll fruits such as pineapples, papayas and bananas flourishing alongside colourful poinsettias and fragrant frangipani. From the hotel you'll get excellent views of the imposing Trois Freres mountain. The hotel is run by a French couple who welcome you top their home as a guest and go out of their way to help you enjoy your stay.
The guest rooms are all en-suite with hot running water. They are simply furnished and have large windows which flood the rooms with daylight. Some of the rooms are in the main building and others are in bungalows in the gardens.
Your day here begins with breakfast in the pretty dining room which overlooks the gardens and pool. This meal should set you up well for the day ahead which may include gentle walking in the nearby countryside, more strenuous hikes to the Trois Freres mountain, visit to Anja reserve and trips to local villages. back at the hotel you can take a refreshing dip in the Madagascar-shaped swimming pool and rest in the gardens. Later you can enjoy an a la carte dinner, created from local ingredients, many grown in the hotel's grounds.

Amanda Marks

"It feels a bit like visiting a maiden aunt from Alsace when you first come here. The decor is quite old-fashioned, albeit that the place is relatively new. However, it is spotlessly clean, there is 24 hour electricity, the view is stunning and the welcome is warm. I didn't get a chance to try the food, but I'm told it's quite good. "

Mr S Saville
"Lovely guest house run by a characterful French lady and her husband (she had spent 20+ years in Madagascar from age 2, and came back to run the B&B). Fantastic location, in the middle of nowhere. Has its own well, so water is potable. No WiFi, and cash only. Good food, with local ingredients. The only downer was that the facilities and treatment of our guides was less good - they said it was the least welcoming place for them (hence 'good' rather than 'excellent'). The owners need to watch this, as it's the guides that run the tours."
