La Mira Hotel is on the bay of Ifaty, one of Madagascar's most popular beach resorts. It is set in 10 acres of flower-filled grounds bordering the coastal dunes. It's a modern hotel providing creature comforts, an ideal place to put your feet up and relax.
Accommodation is in individual stone bungalows. Interiors are light and airy, with soothing pale-coloured walls and tiled floors. Beds are draped with mosquito nets and you'll have an en-suite bathroom.
The high ceilinged restaurant is filled with sunlight during the day, which floods in through the large windows. Meals use only the freshest ingredients including locally-caught fish and seafood, flavoured with herbs and spices.
While here you can go swimming, sunbathe on the beach, play beach volleyball, take boat cruises on the ocean and explore the mangroves by dugout canoe. You can also go for walks in the baobab forests, visit local villages and, between the months of July and September, watch humpback whales out at sea.
"Having arrived here in the dark, I awoke to see the sea from my huge windows, and the pool at the bottom of the colourful garden. The staff had given us a good welcome when we arrived late the night before, and the dinner was good (excellent fish soup and reasonable beef steak). I would have happily spent a few days enjoying the coast from here. It has a relaxing air about it, yet there are lots of options for activities."
