Solio Lodge is set on a private ranch in the Solio Game Reserve, famous for its role in saving the Kenyan rhino from extinction. The lodge welcomed its first guests in August 2010 and its secluded setting offers privacy while its stylish contemporary accommodation is truly luxurious. Solio is located between Mount Kenya and the Aberdares and you'll get wonderful mountain views while staying here.
There are 5 cottages in total, including a family unit with 2 bedrooms. Each has its own lounge complete with open fireplace for the cooler evenings and a large bathroom with twin hand basins, shower and bath. There are large picture windows making the most of the views of the plains and Mount Kenya beyond and the large deck is the perfect place to relax between game drives. You can also take advantage of spa treatments in the privacy of your room.
The main lodge houses the mess area where you can rest between safaris and enjoy tasty food. Meals are also served in the garden on the deck, and private dining can be arranged in your cottage if you wish.
Solio Game Reserve was established in 1970 and is a mix of open grasslands and wooded ravines. As well as the black rhino and white rhino for which the reserve is renowned, you can expect to see many other species such as lion, leopard, cheetah, giraffe, buffalo, eland and oryx. The is a good bird watching area. There are morning and evening/night game drives in the reserve. You can also take guided walks, go cycling and explore on horseback. Fishing and helicopter flights to Mount Kenya can be arranged.
Solio Lodge is owned by The Safari Collection, who also own Giraffe Manor in Nairobi, Sala's Camp in the Masai Mara and Sasaab near Samburu National Reserve.
Open: Solio Lodge is open all year, apart from the month of November.
Location: Solio Lodge is a private conservancy surrounded by ranch land, between Mount Kenya and the Aberdare Mountains. You fly into Nanyuki airstrip, from where it’s a 90 minute drive to the lodge. Private charter flights can land at Solio’s own airstrip.
Rooms: There are 5 guest cottages, each with an en-suite bedroom, a lounge with a fireplace, and a private sundeck with views of Mount Kenya. 1 of the cottages has 2 bedrooms and makes good family accommodation. Every cottage has a safe and a minibar, and bathrooms have both a bath and a shower, and his and hers hand basins.
Activities: During your stay you can go on game drives, join a guide for a nature walk, explore on horseback or by bike, go bird watching, visit a nearby coffee plantation, enjoy trout fishing in Aberdare National Park, and take a helicopter flight to Mount Kenya.
Facilities: The main lodge has a sitting-cum-dining room leading out to a terrace, a small shop, veranda, and a separate dining deck in the gardens. Spa therapies are available in your room.
Dining: Meals are served indoors and outside. Most meals are eaten communally. Bush breakfasts can be arranged, as can private dinners in your cottage.
Children: Children of all ages are welcome.
Health: This is not a malarial area.
Communication: There is free Wi-Fi in the main lodge, and mobile phone coverage.
