The Masai Mara is famous for its big cats. Lions, cheetahs and leopards and are all seen regularly here. This is a must for big cat lovers!
If you could choose just one safari destination, you could do no better than the Masai Mara. Famous for the abundance of lion, the annual wildebeest migration, and the Maasai tribe with their distinctive custom and dress, it is without a doubt one of Africa's most famous safari destinations.
This holiday gives you four full days in which to explore the national park and surrounding region.
In the company of an expert guide, you'll observe and learn about the wildlife, large and small.
We've based this trip on staying at Governor's Camp, which is well-known for being host to the BBC series Big Cat Diary. So come and meet the Marsh & Rhino Ridge prides, Olive the leopard and Shakira the cheetah - if they're feeling sociable!
After the safari excitement you'll be in need of some relaxation and the tropical island of Zanzibar in neighbouring Tanzania is just the place! You have a five night stay in a seaview room at the lovely Fumba Beach Lodge. With its friendly staff, ocean views and rustic charm this is one of our favourites on Zanzibar and is sure to become one of yours, too.
While relaxation is key there are opportunities for watersports and all manner of island excursions including a picnic on a deserted island, so there's plenty to keep you busy but you are left free to choose how to spend your valuable time. It's ideal.
When you arrive at Nairobi airport you will be met and driven across town to Wilson airport for the flight to the Masai Mara. You will be met on arrival and driven to Governors' Camp, where you will spend the next 5-nights. Settle in after your journey and look forward to the safari to come!
Your safari begins. Your stay at Governors' Camp includes 2 extended excursions into the Masai Mara each day. Not only are grazing animals particularly common in this area but big cat sightings are also particularly prevalent. Indeed, the BBC's Big Cat Diary is largely filmed in this area. The bush lands around Rhino Ridge are also good areas for spotting one of the Masai Mara's 20 or so black rhinos. Between activities you have time to relax at the camp on your own private veranda or in the lounge with fellow guests.
You will be transferred to the airstrip for your flight to Wilson and assisted to Nairobi airport, where you board a flight to the Spice island of Zanzibar in Tanzania for the beach part of your holiday. You are greeted on arrival and driven the half hour to your new home, Fumba Beach Lodge. This small lodge is one of our favourites due to the friendly staff, cosy cottages and lovely location away from the crowds. It's an place to rest after your safari, soaking up the ocean views and enjoying some tasty food. Make yourself at home.
Treat yourself to lie-in, well earned after your early starts on safari, and a leisurely breakfast as you ponder the next few days on this tropical island. There's no hurry and no pressure to do anything other than relax, sunbathe and swim, stroll in the gardens and enjoy a massage at the spa. If you wish you can stroll to nearby Fumba village to get a sense for life in Zanzibar. If you want to explore you can hire snorkelling gear and kayaks and there's a dive centre offering excursions for experienced divers and courses for beginners. Back at Fumba Beach the open-air restaurant serves local and international dishes and, naturally, fresh seafood.
There's plenty to keep you occupied during your stay at Fumba Beach. You can take your pick of the excursions offered which include a trip to Jozani Forest to watch red colobus monkeys and a full day boat trip to a deserted island for you private barbecue lunch and snorkelling. Other options such as a boat trip to Prison Island, now inhabited by giant tortoises rather than criminals, and a guided tour of Stone Town with its impressive buildings, narrow alleys and busy markets, add variety to your holiday. Whatever you choose be sure to leave time to unwind beside the ocean at the lodge, where the beach bar, carefully constructed from an authentic Zanzibari dhow, is an idyllic setting for a sundowner.
The time has come to pack your bags and say your goodbyes to the staff at Fumba Beach Lodge, but not before you enjoy one last breakfast by the ocean. You are driven back to the airport for your onward flight.
