Masai Mara Big Cat Safari and Zanzibar

11 days from £2995pp plus international flights.

The Masai Mara is famous for its big cats. Lions, cheetahs and leopards and are all seen regularly here. This is a must for big cat lovers!

If you could choose just one safari destination, you could do no better than the Masai Mara. Famous for the abundance of lion, the annual wildebeest migration, and the Maasai tribe with their distinctive custom and dress, it is without a doubt one of Africa's most famous safari destinations.

This holiday gives you four full days in which to explore the national park and surrounding region.

In the company of an expert guide, you'll observe and learn about the wildlife, large and small.

We've based this trip on staying at Governor's Camp, which is well-known for being host to the BBC series Big Cat Diary. So come and meet the Marsh & Rhino Ridge prides, Olive the leopard and Shakira the cheetah - if they're feeling sociable!

After the safari excitement you'll be in need of some relaxation and the tropical island of Zanzibar in neighbouring Tanzania is just the place! You have a five night stay in a seaview room at the lovely Fumba Beach Lodge. With its friendly staff, ocean views and rustic charm this is one of our favourites on Zanzibar and is sure to become one of yours, too.

While relaxation is key there are opportunities for watersports and all manner of island excursions including a picnic on a deserted island, so there's plenty to keep you busy but you are left free to choose how to spend your valuable time. It's ideal.

Governors Camp, Masai Mara

When you arrive at Nairobi airport you will be met and driven across town to Wilson airport for the flight to the Masai Mara. You will be met on arrival and driven to Governors' Camp, where you will spend the next 5-nights. Settle in after your journey and look forward to the safari to come!

Spotting lions on safari in the Masai Mara

Your safari begins. Your stay at Governors' Camp includes 2 extended excursions into the Masai Mara each day. Not only are grazing animals particularly common in this area but big cat sightings are also particularly prevalent. Indeed, the BBC's Big Cat Diary is largely filmed in this area. The bush lands around Rhino Ridge are also good areas for spotting one of the Masai Mara's 20 or so black rhinos. Between activities you have time to relax at the camp on your own private veranda or in the lounge with fellow guests.

On safari in the Masai Mara

The Masai Mara National Reserve is probably one of the most famous wildlife regions in the world and provides the most diverse game viewing within Kenya. During the annual migration (July-October) around 2 million animals making the long and difficult journey from the Serengeti in Tanzania. Even outside of the migration season wildlife viewing is still magnificent, with the Mara supporting substantial resident wildlife populations including the Big Five. A fascinating array of around 550 species of resident and migratory birds is also present within the Masai Mara.

Your final safari day. Enjoy game drives in this beautiful setting. It's hardly surprising that Governors' Camp was the setting for the film 'Out of Africa', and that much of the BBC's 'Big Cat Diary' was also filmed nearby. Governors' Camp can provide alternative means of wildlife viewing - on foot outside the National Park or with a complementary bird walk around the camp to admire the many species of bird. This evening relax with a sundowner as you chat with fellow guests and enjoy a candle-lit meal alfresco.
