Kenya Adventure Camping Selenkay

Masai Mara Amboseli & the South

Rating: Basic

Kenya Adventure Camping Selenkay overview

Going on a good safari can be a challenge if you are travelling on a tight budget. One way to keep the price down is to opt for camping, but it is important that this is not matched with having an inferior safari vehicle, nor, more importantly, an inferior guide.

Our 'Kenya adventure camping' is not only good quality, with excellent service from staff in camp and good meals cooked by the camp chef, but you have a very high quality guide of the same standard as we offer on our more expensive tailor made lodge-based safaris here in Kenya.

The benefit to you is lower cost accommodation, but not an inferior safari experience.

Additional advantages are that you are closer to the wilderness and it feels like a real adventure, an authentic safari experience, if you will. And you don't have to do any work with this type of camping either!
This particular set up is in the Selenkay conservancy near Amboseli, there is a sister operation that operates in the Masai Mara. They are easy to combine to give you experience of two different areas of Kenya at an affordable price.

Open: This style of camping is not available in the rainy seasons from April to June and from November to mid-December.

Location: This particular adventure camping takes place in Selenkay in Amboseli, but there is a sister operation in the Masai Mara.

Rooms: The dome tents are for 2 people (or 2 adults and a small child would also be possible). They are 6ft high in the centre and 10ft by 10ft square. A comfortable mattress and a pillow are provided. The tents are insect proof. Each tent has a private bathroom tent immediately behind with a flush loo, wash basin and bush shower. You can either bring your own sleeping bad and towel, or these can be hired for $10 per person per day.

Activities: Your expert guide will take you out each day on safari. He will do what he can to allow you to see as much as possible of the region you are visiting, and of course the resident wildlife. In some areas bush walks and night drives are also possible.

Staff: There are staff at the camp the whole time and you don't have to do any of the camp chores. The staff do all the cooking, cleaning, washing up, heating water for shower and so on. The camp is hosted by your professionally qualified safari guide.

Dining: An experienced safari chef cooks each meal for you. Meals are high quality, and usually served in the dining tent, with picnic lunches provided on all-day game drives. Mineral water is supplied daily both when you are in camp and also on game drives and walks. Other drinks are not included, but beers and soft drinks are available at reasonable prices, and if you want to bring your own wine or spirits that is fine.

Children: This is not really recommended for children under 10 years old. There are discounted rates for children from 10-16 years.

Health: Kenya is mostly a malarial region.

Communication: Mobile phone signals can not be guaranteed, and there is no Wi-Fi.

"Fantastic. It didn't feel like camping, though as we were in tentsf it must have been."

Alison C.
"We were upgraded to Porini Mara camp where Harry the manager was passionate about the wildlife and environment. He obviously inspired the guides too and the whole camp had a lovely feel which made the stay a delight. Lovely to chat to other travellers. Generally like minded people who had chosen this camp."
Peter Lambert
"Oi-kenyai was a bit nicer in terms of the dining area, was kept cleaner. Tents a bit too close though so there was a lot of snoring! Selenkay camping area was more spacious. Great dining under the stars at Selenkay. would be nice to have hammocks in Selenkay like Oi-Kinyei had I was disappointed as at Oi-Kinyei they didn't really cater to my vegan diet as much as I would have liked and it caused a bit of awkwardness. To give them credit Jackson ordered soya milk but that didn't arrive until 1/2 way through the 3 days stay.He did also let Selenkay know so they had soya milk. I had thought I should reiterate the vegan thing before departure.  We did go for a great night drive and watched the lion and lioness interact on our last night.
TRIBES REPLY: We're very sorry that your vegan diet was not picked up at first.  The message had been sent to the camp.  This has now been taken up with the executive chef for the camp, and we are confident that the camp's vegan offerings will now be much better and taken good note of for future clients.  "

"Amazing place to stay and truly our favourite from the holiday. Decent sized tents, very comfortable bedding, outstandingly delicious food and the staff were just fantastic! We truly fell in love with this camp and the staff there. Special shout outs to Our guide Daniel and Jackson as well as James and Joshua in camp"
Abraham and Susie
"Very friendly and obliging staff, excellent food and services for a tented site. Multiple charging points for electronic equipment is a big bonus. "
