Taybet Zaman

Petra & the South

Rating: Mid-range

Taybet Zaman overview

Located 12 kilometres from Petra, the village of Taybeh has been converted to a 5 star resort with the support of the local community. The old village was almost deserted as the community had moved away during the 1960s, and in the early 1990s the mayor proposed turning the old village houses into a tourist resort, rebuilt and owned by the local community, keeping alive old crafts skills and bringing employment and money to revitalise the villagers.

There are 111 guest houses and a royal suite, each with modern facilities including private bathrooms, satellite TV, telephone and minibar. Tucked away off the old village streets is a swimming pool, Turkish bath with traditional Ottoman features and the services of a professional masseur. The Sahtain Restaurant serves both traditional Arabic meals and international dishes, while there is a separate bar and terrace from where guests can enjoy views of the Petra mountains. There is also a bakery producing fresh bread and local pastries. A small market area sells locally produced pottery, glass, jewellery and textiles.

Since its completion in 1994, Taybet Zaman has won numerous awards, including the 1996 British Airways Tourism for Tomorrow Award and the 1997 Green Global Commendation Award.

Yvonne Chapman (21/10/2012)

"I thought we might have made a mistake when we drove away from Petra towards this hotel, but once we got there we were delighted. We were upgraded to a bigger room with a courtyard, and it was very comfortable; after spending the day with the crowds in Petra, it was great to be somewhere so peaceful. The food was good, and the staff helpful. We had two slight niggles: one that they never offered a no smoking area in the restaurant, we had to ask each time, and the second was the poor wifi, though they tried hard to rectify this. We would recommend this hotel for visiting Petra, the short drive was no problem."

Louise McAlavey (02/10/2010)
"We really enjoyed this place although it was a bit lacking in atmosphere - it seems that its heyday was in the 90's. But no complaints - although we had had to pay for an upgrade for a superior room due to the place being apparently full and it didn't seem that busy..... also the room was nice but not sure why it was superior - it seemed pretty standard. However our view down the valley was particularly lovely. The pool was very nice too. The food was very good as well."

"Taybet Zaman was fabulous!"
Romy Tudor (01/04/2008)
"Claims to be 5 star but really it's a 4 star. Service was variable. Clean, comfortable, great location, good food. Atmosphere a bit lacking."
Nicola Benz (29/02/2008)
"The accommodation was great."
