Surya Samudra is set in 20 acres of lush coconut forest with wonderful views of the Arabian Sea. The atmosphere is relaxed and the pace of life slow and tranquil, making this a great place to relax after the excitement and bustle of India's towns and cities. Blending traditional Keralan culture with Western comforts, the resort offers comfortable and secluded accommodation.
There are 31 cottages scattered throughout the grounds, set amidst rich vegetation ensuring privacy and located on different levels. All are constructed of wood recycled from traditional Keralan homes, fully restored and updated with air conditioning and modern amenities. The cottages are spacious and light, with large windows that can be opened to the air and sea views. The bathrooms are open to the sky and each cottage has its own eating area and veranda.
Sandy paths link the cottages to the main guest areas including the inviting swimming pool, with loungers and parasols and views of the sea. Essence restaurant specialises in Asian cuisine and uses fresh fish and seafood which is plentiful. International dishes are available at Cafe Samsara. Both restaurants have panoramic views over the ocean. There's a separate bar offering a wide range of drinks.
The spa has a broad range of treatments and massages, including Ayurvedic therapies as well as Oriental and Western treatments. All therapists are also trained in yoga and can construct personal treatment programmes on request, as well as conduct sunrise and sunset yoga sessions. Hotel staff can arrange sightseeting trips to places of interest in the area including temples, museums and art galleries, as well as houseboat cruises on the Kerala backwaters.

Location: Surya Samudra is set on a cliff above a tropical beach in Niraamaya, Kerala in South India. It is 12kms from Kovalam and 23kms from Trivandrum airport. The hotel is set in 20 acres of pretty gardens and coconut trees.
Rooms: Accommodation is in 31 traditionally-styled cottages, with en-suite bathrooms open to the sky. They are set well apart from each other to ensure privacy. There are 5 categories of cottage, ranging in size and proximity to the beach. All are air conditioned and have TV, DVD player, ‘phone, safe, minibar and tea and coffee making facilities. There is space for extra beds or cots with the maximum cottage occupancy being 2 adults and 2 children. All cottages have private balconies or terraces. There is 24-hour room service.
Activities: Relaxing by the pool or on the secluded beaches by the hotel, swimming, walking in the gardens. Yoga is available in the hotel grounds and the spa offers massage and treatments. Taxis are available for day trips and excursions to explore the sites of Kovalam and Trivandrum and other nearby destinations such as Kanyakumari, the southernmost tip of India. Boat trips on the Kerala backwaters can be arranged.
Facilities: There is an infinity pool. The Spa Niraamaya offers Ayurvedic and international treatments and has a steam room and a gazebo for outdoor treatments. Yoga sessions can be arranged. Guests have a choice of dining options; Café Samsara serves local and international cuisines, while the other restaurant, Essence, specialises in Pan-Asian food. The bar has views of the ocean. The hotel has a library and sitting room and there is a souvenir shop.
Dining: Meals are taken at separate tables. Private dining can be arranged on the yoga platform, by the pool or on the beach.
Children: Children of all ages are welcome. There is a children’s play area with DVDs, toys and games. The hotel has dedicated child minders and babysitting can be arranged. There is shallow area of the swimming pool for children and special yoga classes for youngsters.
