Shahpura Bagh

Rajasthan & the North

Rating: Mid-range

Shahpura Bagh overview

Once the summer home of the rulers of Shahpura, the 45 acre estate of Shahpura Bagh is a perfect place to base yourself in an unspoilt part of Rajasthan. Located about halfway between Jaipur and Udaipur, it provides a peaceful spot to escape from the hustle and bustle of the cities and explore the local rural communities and wildlife.

The spacious gardens are surrounded by lakes and are a haven for birdlife. The infinity pool in a secluded part of the gardens provides an ideal place to relax. It's heated in cooler months for your comfort. There are two residences, the main house where the Shahpura family reside and where meals are served on cooler nights, and a restored guest house where most of the 10 guest rooms and suites are located. Originally built to house important family guests, the rooms in the guest house are light and airy, with high ceilings and large windows. Many have doors opening out on to the gardens. The rooms are all elegantly furnished and equipped with modern amenities such as electronic safes, minibar, air-conditioning and modern bathrooms with bath and shower. There is also a 2-bedroom villa, ideal for families, located by the pool.

In cooler evening meals are served in the dining room in the main residence, but for the rest of the year guests can eat al fresco on the terrace and in the garden. Snacks, light meals and drinks are available by the pool. The cuisine is mainly Indian with some international dishes, with most of the vegetables coming from its own gardens. Special private dinners can be arranged. Indian wine, limited French wine, beer and spirits are available.

The Shahpura family who reside here and manage Shahpura Bagh are very welcoming and hospitable. Meals can be served with the family, and guests are very much made to feel at home. There is a lot to do in the local area -exploring the village of Shahpura and the local communities, visiting nearby temples, boating, birdwatching or fishing in the lake and hiking or cycling -but this is also a great place to relax and enjoy the peaceful setting. There is also an airy sitting room where guests are welcome to relax and escape the heat of the day. Sipping sundowners at nearby Dikhola Fort is a great way to end your day and begin your evening.

"Very peaceful oasis and we loved the home-cooked food."

"Shapurabagh in Shapura was outstanding."
Jackie and Alan (18/11/2019)
"It appears that guests at this hotel tend to stay only one or two nights as it provides a stopping place between two other destinations. This is a real shame. Although there are no big sights to see close by, the local villages provide a real insight into local Indian life, whilst there is a host of wildlife to enjoy. This is coupled with a chance to relax, eat some great local food and learn how the generations of the family who own the property have contributed and continue to contribute to the local villages. You won't find tailored lawns and flower beds here. Instead there is a rugged beauty that encourages the wildlife. Walking around we saw egrets, peacocks, owls as well as beautiful butterflies and much more. The pool area is beautiful and the public rooms full of character and lovely furnishings. Service was first class, friendly and helpful from every member of staff whilst the owners explained the family and local history - conversations we will remember for the rest of our lives. The hotel offers a variety of tours - one per night stay was included. Sunset from the family owned 450 year old fort with a drink is a must. It was one of the most fascinating and enjoyable experiences we have ever had. We also took the villages tour which included a visit to the school supported by the owners and a visit to their farm. As we had displayed an interest in birds, Shabbir, the hotel guide, spent some time pointing out many of the local birds he spotted on the way stopping for photos. Shabbir's knowledge coupled with his keen willingness to make our tour enjoyable was brilliant and he must get the credit for achieving that goal. We can't thank him enough. He also produces some wonderful paintings so if you stay here be sure to leave room in your suitcase. The rooms are all different but ours was huge, furnished with lovely antiques and a large comfortable bed. We also had a large bathroom complete with standalone bath and a separate large walk-in shower. Purified bottled water, tea and coffee making facilities were provided and the room contained plenty of seating and a large television. Wi-Fi was a bit unreliable in our room but fine elsewhere as well as by the beautiful pool. There is no dinner menu - the owners eat the same food as the guests. However, on arrival we were asked about any restrictions and preferences and that was clearly taken into account in the variety of dishes provided. Breakfast was brought to our table and included cereal, fresh fruit, choice of tea and coffee and freshly cooked breakfast on request. Staying here was a very different experience for us and one we thoroughly enjoyed. As always, one needs to set one's expectations appropriately. For us, our stay was one of the most enjoyable we've had in many years of travelling."

"Beautiful calm and peaceful place to stay, after the chaos of the roads etc. Felt so at home with the family who gave us so much attention both during meals and taking us out on trips. We will never forget out time there. "
