This is a real gem, a boutique hotel with nine lavish suites set in the heart of historic Kolkata, a short walk from the famous Victoria Memorial. The hotel occupies the top two floors of an office building, and from this vantage point there are wonderful sweeping views over the city.
During your stay you can take in the main sites, with the option of guided tours, visit museums, stroll along Park Street and rub shoulders with locals at the bustling markets. You should get a good feel for life in the present day city, as well learning about its interesting past.
The hotel provides a retreat from the busy city. Relax in the drawing room, peruse a book in the library and dine on creative cuisine, all while enjoying the beautifully furnished and decorated surroundings. The wallpaper was specally designed in Paris and depicts rural scenes from the India of yesteryear, the furniture is elegant and fine artworks adorn the walls. The overall feel is of gracious living from a bygone era. Outdoor areas include a courtyard and a rooftop terrace with a sundeck and inviting rimflow pool, all with superb views.
Suites are spacious and their style mirrors that of the communal areas, with carved wooden bedsteads and attractive textiles. Each has a sitting area and some have a balcony or terrace. Location: Glenburn Penthouse is on Chowringhee Road in central Kolkata close to the Victoria Memorial. It is situated on the top two floors of a modern office building. The international airport is about a 45 minute drive away.
Rooms: There are nine suites, all with four-poster beds, a sitting area and bathroom with a bath and shower. Suites are divided into two categories. Royal Bengal suites (four), with either a view of Victoria Memorial or a sitting room and terrace. Calcutta suites (five) are slightly smaller, have a bedroom, dressing room and bathroom. One of these suites has a balcony.
Activities: Sightseeing, the hotel is within a short walk of Victoria Memorial, the Maidan, Kolkata’s main park, Park Street, one of the city’s main thoroughfares, and Park Street Cemetery. Shopping at the markets, visiting museums and churches. A sunset boat cruise and guided sightseeing trips can be arranged (pay locally).
Facilities: The hotel has a sitting room, dining room, library, a shaded veranda and a balcony, areas which are used for outdoor dining, and a courtyard. There’s a rooftop terrace with a sundeck and an infinity pool. The hotel offers a concierge service.
Dining: The menu is varied and draws inspiration from street food as well as local and Anglo-Indian traditions. Breakfast and afternoon tea and included in your stay, with lunch and dinner available at extra cost.
