Garh Jaisal

Rajasthan & the North

Rating: Modest

Garh Jaisal overview

Built into the golden walls of Jaisalmer Fort, enjoying fabulous views over the city of Jaisalmer and the Thar Desert, Garh Jaisal is a fascinating place to stay. There are just seven rooms, each within the thick sandstone walls with a window seat providing unforgettable views. The rooms are small and simply decorated, but feature en-suite bathrooms, air-conditioning and ceiling fans. Service here is relaxed and friendly, and the rooftop terrace provides an ideal spot to escape from the hustle and bustle of the city and enjoy the hospitality.

Open:  Garh Jaisal is open all year.

Location:  Garh Jaisla is built within walls of the fort in Jaisalmer city in western Rajasthan. The hotel is close to the train station. The hotel can collect guests from the station. The nearest commercial airport currently in operation is Jodhpur, about a 6 hour drive away.

Rooms:  All 7 guest rooms have a private bathroom with a shower and cushioned window seats with views over the city or the fort and palace. Rooms have traditional wooden furniture and are individually decorated in brightly coloured textiles and tapestries. They are air conditioned and have ceiling fans.  Guests are supplied with printed cotton robes for the duration of their stay. Both these and the bed quilt can be purchased as a souvenir.

Activities:  Guests can explore the city of Jaisalmer with its palace, Jain temple, main square, market and alleyways, or stroll around the lake. The hotel can arrange trips into the desert. Ayurvedic treatments can be arranged if booked in advance.

Facilities:  There is a rooftop terrace with great views over the city and the Thar Desert, where guests can enjoy a refreshing drink. There is also a private courtyard. The hotel supplies each guest with mineral water every day and tea is always available. The hotel serves a daily breakfast, served on the terrace until midday. The restaurant next door to the hotel (Suriya) will deliver meals to the hotel terrace. The hotel serves water, tea, mango lassi and beer.

Dining:  Meals are taken at separate tables on the terrace.

Children:  Children of all ages are welcome, but very young children may not enjoy the strong sun and desert setting.

Health:  We recommend malarial prophylactics for travel to India.

Communication:  There is free high speed internet access.

Notes:   Due to the nature of the property, Garh Jaisal is not suitable for people of limited mobility.

Isabel Lledo

"Good location, very friendly staff, amazing roof terrace. Small, basic bathroom."

Geoffrey Furber
"Good location, but could be much better with a little more care to detail. The staff were young men who were keen and helpful, but it did feel a bit of a come down from the Rawla Narlai which we had left the day before. The hotel felt more like a budget hotel, but we thoroughly enjoyed the experience and Jaisalmer."
Paul Doe
"Superb modern hotel with outstanding young staff (a novelty in India). Very romantic and night time views are sensational"
Mr. Peter Clouting
"Fantastic bedroom (like something from the Arabian Nights). Wonderful views across Jaiselmer city. Food average. "
Mr John Baugh
"We loved this quirky hotel in the battlements. The staff were so kind and friendly and made drinks and snacks when needed as the nearby restaurant was not in operation The rooftop terrace had amazing views "
